Yeah, agreed. I'd say it's definitely a trigger. There's a youtube video of that same spot with four characters and the guy shoots/hits your characters and only damages them, not insta-kills them.

Well, maybe DA2 isn't the biggest disappointment this year. This is at least a contender.
If that stuff above is a trigger, that makes it even more ludicrous. "Let's put some funny triggers in our failboat of a game to pass the time and annoy the twenty people that pirate this steaming pile."

The first boss is the cook yeah? I beat him easily with the theta release.
