What I find to be the saddest part of this whole thing is how pationately and vehemently people jump to defend a game that at best is below average and at worst is a reflection of the community (please refer to the quoted text) in both style and intelligence.

Top reasons making WoW suck:
repetive (always the same thing, bash that, bash something bigger of that, run back and get XP + ugly thing/money do it all over again until you are lvl60)
no fun when doing solo
the price (first £30+ for the box and then £12 a month, come on!!!)
things will get nerfed over and over again, thats for sure.
honor system will be out when nobody plays it anymore
battlegrounds will be out in the next century
did I say repetive?
Reasons Guild Wars is better then WoW:
more PvP (almost only PvP)
looking waaay better than wow
no monthly fee! |
repetitive : you think guild wars won't be repetitive ? wait a month after release and tell us that again
no fun when doing solo : then don't solo ?
the price : I have to agree on this one, wow is expensive, but worth it
nerf : things getting nerfed is called class balance and is meant to make pvp better
honor system : honor system is out since tuesday on US servers and on friday for euro servers
battlegrounds : they will be out this year, but who gives a fuck when you're on a pvp server where just about everywhere is a battleground
repetitive : seriously, how can a game that get NO monthly updates be not repetitive when there's no new places, monsters, quests every now and then ?
guild wars better because there is more pvp : you should have tried WoW on a pvp server maybe
looking better : remove gloom and it looks like shit, also the terrain really sucks since you can't get really where you want, there are zones (ewww)

I doubt this will last.
You can't expect much in terms of server stability / low latency / anti cheat measures of an MMORPG where there is no monthly fee.
Battlenet has proven that time and time again. From Diablo I - Warcraft 3.
I give props to the developers however for letting players in on the E3 alpha and continuous betas. More devs. need to start doing this.
2 years from now, the servers will be an overcrowded/laggy/cheatfest. Mark my words. No subscribers=no incentive for devs them to keep the game at peak performance.

Again speaking nonsense...
Quote: | repetitive : seriously, how can a game that get NO monthly updates be not repetitive when there's no new places, monsters, quests every now and then ? | FORTUNATELY you are correct about having no monthy updates!
Guild Wars will be featuring a new streaming technology that promises to FINALLY get rid of such stupid things... The new streaming technology works great! Instead of waiting weeks or MONTHS for a crappy patch that fixes some bugs, balances and new content, ArenaNet uses this technology to stream the content to your computer while you play the game! They have an entire team of developers that will be dedicated to adding and updating the game on a DAILY BASIS. And also another team of people that are dedicated to creating Expansion Packs (released every 6-9 months) that will add EVEN MORE stuff such as new areas, quests, skills, classes etc... They claim that these 'chapters' will have as much, or MORE content as the original game/storyline. So, at the very least (not including the streaming content), the game doubles in size about every 6 months.
Quote: | You can't expect much in terms of server stability / low latency / anti cheat measures of an MMORPG where there is no monthly fee. | Most of the game is actually stored on the server, instead of client-side, including characters, inventory etc.. So, supposedly this game will be very hard to cheat, but I guess we shall just have to see if that holds true

And wow isnt a lag infested cheaters paradise? What version of WoW have you been playing because thats not what is on any of the 4 different servers I have played on.
Fanboi's will never be disuaded, the game could be the worst of all mmo's ever created (which it isnt but is damn close.) and they will stand by it. Which makes me happy because they can stay there and rot with their loot whore buddies yelling I pwned you with easy to thier 12 year old heart's content.
If by content you mean 2 pathetic dungeons in the 6 months the game has been out. Pings which during the height of the release were at worst in the 100ms range that have now (after several hardware upgrades and a general population reduction of about 42%) grown to the 1k ms range. Cheats, hacks, exploits galore and a customer service staff which is so well trained that they can not even cut and paste the proper responses into their emails for issues that arise on a daily basis. An honor system which was just implemented that encourages people to gank, en masse, people 12 levels beneath them (this is from the standpoint of a level 60) and all this *cough* fun, for $15 per moth. Sounds like a wise investment but, then again when its your mommy's money that you are spending what should you care. Wow has less original content than an episode of the Jerry SPringer show, and about all the intelligence of the average guest on said show.
Its the sad fact that people are accepting less than mediocrity which makes the mmo genre take 10 steps backward for every half step gained since the release of Neverwinter Nights on AOL.
Guild Wars/ArenaNet have made many many promises, which SOE/Verant/Lucas Arts/Mythic/Warner Bros/Blizzard have all done, whether or not they make good on them we will have to see. But, in the one year that has passed since my first beta event ArenaNet has made HUGE strides and I'm willing to bet they make a better effort at keeping their word than blizzard has. Blizzard is riding on the name that they once had. Too bad for them most of their development teams have left that company and gone to places like... oh I dunno.. ArenaNet/NCSoft.

From a gameplay standpoint, World of Warcraft did alot of things right (no reliance on guild for items, no grouping required, great bazaar system, soulbound items), but they OVERDID these elements. Typical Blizzard marketing strategy, appeal to the masses.
They made the game so user friendly, so open , and so fuckin easy, that a lobotomized dog could be successful in it As a result, they had server overcrowdage etc as userbase skyrocketed.
As for the Customer Service reps, EVERY customer service rep I have ever interacted with has no idea what he/she is talking about.. Lets face it, they cut and paste from a manual, which when talking with the general john doe of the WoW community, is enough.
I'm not bashing Guild Wars in itself (I only played that E3 alpha last year they hosted, wasn't too impressed. Everything too shiny ), I'm merely trying to show that when subscription #s aren't a factor, devs. put less effort into maintaining a smooth gaming experience as time goes on.
Don't shoot the prophet.

Yeah, even though WoW has a monthly fee, there are still instability problems galore, and hacks are everywhere. I remember one time I was bein attacked by someone underground ffs!
I can't say whether guild wars will be any better, but i'll give it a try, considering i'm finished with WoW.

GW was alright, the opening city is great, but once you leave (when it mentions theres no going back) it gets kinda lame.
Some one said that the world felt very "singelplayer", well as the beta said (in-game) when you leave hub cities (where you trade, buy, sort out a party, start a guild etc.) you get your own "copy' of the world. The only people who see you or you will see is the other people in your party for that current mission.
The quests once the game really starts are not things you can do on your own either. Its essential to get a team to do the quests, there are NPC's to play with but there notihng special and it still feels very singeplayer.
The skills, trades etc. are pretty MMO standard.
The games nothing special.
The only attraction is that its not month to month paying.

I went for it when I found out it had no monthly fee. This game seems to have an interesting concept - it's worth the cash just to see how it all works. I'm glad it doesn't have the grind of wow or similar games - it seems to be more focused on actually entertaining the player as opposed to driving the player to get more crap/level up or whatever. Also, it seems to be based on skill as opposed to playing time.
I'm also going to be in a pretty large guild so it should be fun.

The games only 34bucks? If so, I might have to grab it.
Thats fucked up, play.com has if for 34$ but all the american shops charge 50$. Anyone know if the UK version with work in US? And if they ship here?
If it isnt, I'm not going to get this game til I can get it for 34$ too. Thats it!! I'm not playing this game!!

I've been thinking about getting guild wars, its just a game, no monthly fee, i cna just throw it away if i dont like it without that "oh shit i payed for next month too, i better play to make the money worth it" feeling..
ONE THING i wanna know from you beta dudes tough.. (ive just been in 2-3 beta weekends)
In the beta weekends the game seemed VERY linear, "do this mission before u can do that".. Is it like that in the entire game all the time? Is it a linear mission campaign? if so, i hate it. I tought this was a mmorpg, more open, but yeah, please tell me anyone that knows.

The price has nothing to do with the developers or publishers. Play.com are the only company to charge the lower price - everywhere else in the UK has the same price as the US. I think play.com can charge such low prices due to low overheads or something.

Have you looked at that site? All they sell is DVDs... only.
Thats alright, I just typed up a letter. Just have to get an envelop and stamp. Probably cost more since it will go to a different country. But god damn it, they start shipping to the US, or there communists.

Maybe they like, kind of expect you Americans to have other quality gameshops comparable to theirs?
Anyway I'm getting the game from a local shop that's selling it for only 25 euro due to a mistake in the pre orders xD (i'm serious, rest is a joke, duh)
And no they don't ship to the U.S.
And yes they're communists

Is there any chance of this appearing on NFOrce at all? Or as it is an online only game, no chance whatsoever? £17.99 delivered on play.com seems good enough to me.
