I've never really had any issues with Stanza when upgrading firmware. All my books are still there and the bookmarks to. With games it all depends on how you got them, if you got them from itunes your good to go but if you used other sources you lose all your saves unless you ssh into your phone to back them up.

So, once I save my blobs with tiny umbrella, how do I go about updating to 4.3.1 and preserve all my Cydia downloads and hacked ipas and settings etc?
Or do I have to write down what I had installed and manually instal again? What about all the save games and settings for my hacked games etc?

Use pkgbackup. And just a normal backup in Itunes, and you will be fine. You might have to rearrange your normal Apps on the homescreen, but I am not sure about that.

Anyone have a good derp guide to getting Installous (or whatever the best app is now) setup on an iPad 1? Just got the files to JB and will do that tonight.

paid apps often do what they're supposed to 
cracked cydia apps may not always work as advertised and may collect data from a phone user.

The data goes to apple... i'd rather think i know who is collecting info on me... than have some random terrorist dig up my details and what not because i used a cracked version of ifile or summen...

Had enough of Apple after tried synching Itouch to a second computer. It said it was already synched with another pc and will erase all data. Well, it did erase all data. So..I then ran Jailbreak, installed installous and now playing all free apps/games. Also hex edited Itunes so I can SYNCH on TWO computers! Apple sucks so bad and is now owned!

I have/had enough troubles with my iphone 4 too. Mostly all of the restrictions by Apple.
For example the need of Itunes and missing option to upgrade storage with a micro-sd. Ony my Samsung i could just plug the phone via a "standard" usb-cable into the computer and start copying files from and onto it. Without the need of an extra Program for that. Yes there are some cool games for it... But i think my next Smartphone wil be an Android one again.

upgraded my 3gs that running jb 3.1.3 ios to jb 4.1.3 yesterday using red snow, lost all my contacts, notes, photos, but used a 3.1.3 backup to restore the data to the 4.1.3 and it worked

it's possible to fill your iOS device without itunes, but you're right, you always (?) need a 3rd party tool.
before i bought a iphone 4, i bought a htc desire ... not my type of smartphone.

Well I'm bored (broke me heal bone so nothing to do) so I thought I'd update my iPhone 4 (jailbroken 4.1) to 4.3.2. Which is the best Jailbreak available at the moment to use ? I'll backup my contacts in iTunes and then just update to 4.3.2 via iTunes... I think ??

These "one-click" tools like redsn0w really don't get any simpler, to be honest. Load the app, select your .IPSW file, connect the powered off iDevice to your PC and then follow the on-screen instructions. 2 minutes later you got yourself a Jailbroken machine =)

Wasn't 4.3.2 released, among the other things, to counter the exploit?

This is a new one =) 4.3.2 was JBed last week, but tethered, now it's untethered with another release of redsn0w. They're always finding exploits... it's amazing how Apple can't fix them.
