im looking at some lower end bose but i'm not sure
there's Samsung HW-C560S it has a pretty reciever.
there's Yamaha YHT3045HD which looks awesome but sold out almost everywhere i look here.
and there's Denon DHT-391XP.

I don't know what to look for in a home theatre system and i can't throw money at something big and loud. I also live in an apartment Neutral bitchy bitch above me. family with a child beside me.

I myself have Onkyo HT-S3200..Pretty nice speakers(660W) + receiver
Only thing I dislike audio is pass-through which means I need to connect audio with either coaxial/digital cable and it does not contain DTS -HD MA

But overall I have been pleased with it

you need to look what kind of inputs it has if you ever plan to watch 3D movies, receiver with HDMI 1.4 is a must..and Dolby TrueHD & DTS HD MA..

I would stay away from Samsung/Sony...never owned them but I do not feel comfortable with a company that produces pretty much anything

Like Yamaho/Denon/Onkyo all they specialize is speakers/receivers so you will not go wrong if you buy either of them

I suggest you buy Yahama/Denon receiver with Polk speakers..cant go wrong with that combination

Denon is supposed to be very good as far as audio systems goes Smile

I'm on my second denon, the denon avr 1910 can't go wrong with Denon/Onkyo. i nearly bought a Onkyo but some people are put off that they run quiet hot, or atleast the model i was looking at in comparison to the 1910 did.

I can agree that a Denon/Onkyo AVR paired with some Polk Audio speakers sounds quite awesome. I just upped my setup to 9.2 (onkyo/polk combo) and have been extremely happy. That being said. Some of the lower-end Onkyos have some heat issues, but then again, you shouldn't be putting a modern AVR into a cabinet that is to remain closed without putting some sort of fan in there. But it's only money, right!?

Good luck choosing, it's going to be a tough decision. It took me almost three months of himming and hawing *ahem, research, ahem* until I chose my setup.

well it's tricky. i want the most bad ass system out there that i can afford but at the same time... i'm barely home and can't really afford to spend 3k on a system that i'll barely use. so i moved the budged down to 400 or so so i can find something decent and good enough.

You might want to consider going for a slightly higher end receiver. Buying a set with Audyssey features might be a good idea for an apartment, since it has all sorts of features to allow for a better experience at lower volume levels (also it makes the setup a bit easier, but it's probably not worth the extra price for that alone). I have opted for Denon's 1611 instead of the lowest entry level 1311 at the time partly because of this.

Then you can just buy a 5.1 speaker set, to save some time an money (as opposed to buying everything separately). It should be more than enough for common use.

If you are thinking of using it for PC gaming, there are other things to consider. Mainly the fact that optical/coaxial digital outputs do not support multi-channel PCM.

spend at least $400 on a receiver, at long as it is decent (and current ie HDMI 1.4 x 3-4 ports, 1080p upscaling + passthrough, support for high def audio + 3d) it should last a bunch of years.

and then since you spent your whole budget on that, find a dirt cheap set of 5.1s from factorydirect.ca or something that you can replace in a year or two. I found a not too terrible set of 5.1 speakers clearance at futureshop for $99 (down from $299).

hmmm i'll do some more digging around
right now it's between
http://www.2001audiovideo.com/product_info.php?cPath=39_86&products_id=6091
and
http://www.2001audiovideo.com/product_info.php?cPath=39_86&products_id=5850

didn't think of buying just a receiver and some cheap speakers. Hmmm.
The logitech ones are cool too since tv has optical out for audio i could just use them and they sure look purdy.
