Having the actual disc would allow unpacking the decrypted data once the key is made available via Steam, however it would not give access to any later modified data such as a eventual day-1 release patch.
(Which might be tomorrow, all Portal 2 data seems readied from what I just checked via SteamRegEdit or what the program was called again and there's a final release beta up for it, of course the keys aren't available yet.)

Can't you do the same thing with the preloaded data once the key becomes available? Using some sort of a Steam loader/tool..?

That's not unique to Valve. Most devs engage in that to some degree or other. That being said, the participants aren't inherently skilled at playing the game merely by virtue of being required to play it. Of course that's precisely why you get generic office types to test it - to make sure you cover the casual/non-gamer segment of your target market.

My point is that he most definitely played it many times already + it's very likely he has participated in the "Cabal" process, acting as what you call a "designer".
Plus, Chet was in the same room, and he has definitely proven that he is "skilled" (lol) enough to play a freaking game, but he wasn't the one playing. If Pinkerton was inherently bad would they pick him to demonstrate the game?
And what about when they tell him "ok, everyone must have figured the solution by now" and he proceeds to solve the puzzle instead of moving in circles like he did for the last five minutes?
Anyway, it's pretty pointless thing to debate but I find ridiculous the suggestion that any game company would pick someone who is inherently BAD at games to demonstrate their product. What if he gets stuck? etc..

i don't think it would shine favorably on Valve if they'd unlock the game for the POTATO participants, sure they did all the work, but it should be beneficial to all so that people that didnt pay for the Potato sack could also enjoy Portal 2 since they fucking bought the thing.
hopefully by 6pm tommorow (current) it'll get unlocked, though i wouldn't be surprised if they won't unlock it until the ARG puzzles are completed.

I agree, if it's unlocked early it should be unlocked for everyone, or at least all the people that preordered before the 15th.

You forget to mention the obvious fact that we didnt do squat in the whole ARG deal (also pre-orderd before the 15 for that matter) and want to reap the benefits of others.

Ha Of course. Actually after the 17th I will be away from my home for the next couple of weeks so I won't be able to play it at all until later, so I pray for a release on the 15th!!!
Also it would be somewhat unfair if you had to pay ~35 euros to get the Potato pack to gain early access...
But the semi-confirmations we got that the game will be released early suggest that the ARGers "help unlock the game early" instead of "will unlock the game early" so I don't worry that much.
I have also thought of the possibility they might unlock only the co-op campaign.. so as that those on consoles etc don't read spoilers about the SP campaign, days before they are able to play it..

Well the PS3 uses Steamworks so that will probably be unlock aswell, don't know about the 360 version, but imo sales would profit if they'd release early thorugh word of mouth and reviews.
For me it's either way beneficial, if they do it tommrow i'll finish it in the weekend, if not i'll have time right after i finish with my finals.
Hopefully the Co-Op will have an AI team mate since i can't find someone available at the same time as me

Lol, what's there to unlock on consoles? The files aren't encrypted! The problem is you can't get the actual disc of the game early as stores (as far as we know) have not been informed of an early release.

Quote: | The first title to support Steam on a console, Portal 2 offers cross-platform matchmaking, gameplay, friends, chat, and achievements, all powered by Steam. Steam on the PS3 also saves co-op game progress and single player saved games to the Steam Cloud, enabling players to pick up where they left off on any PlayStation®3.
The Steam overlay for PS3™ provides access to Steam friends, displaying their in-game or online status and providing a quick pathway to text chats, player profiles, friend requests, and game invites. Steam Achievements are earned in lockstep with PSN Trophies and are also accessible within the Steam overlay. |

Need that for BF3 and other shooters!
Then we can finally show console players how an FPS is meant to be played

It's real, what the countdown means who knows? could just be Valve mindfucking everyone or it could be an actual release to those who preordered the game or as some seem to think it could be an early release for those who did this potato thing but I highly doubt Valve would only allow people who did this potato thing to play 4 days before anyone else

So how exactly does one "do" this potato thing? I thought it was just some cheap games with some Portal inspired levels.

You have to do certain stuff within these games for a prompt to appear and then you have to enter the correct password: http://valvearg.com/wiki/Potato_Sources
