It's a damned shame if it's true... the x360key is just too bloody expensive, it really does need some competition.

Hahaha mega fail. I had my doubts about this shit- I know it'd be more hassle than I thought, and knowing now that you have to open up your machine and grab a key from your drive makes it laughable at it's cost!

So whats the problem? If you flash your drive you have the key in a file, right?
So itś not hard to copy the key to the SDcard

Nobody thought that at all, in fact you'll see that I specifically said that it's a pass-through device that needs connecting to the motherboard and then to the DVD drive via a SATA cable. You're just being a trolling dickcheese, like always, making grandiose claims and never having the balls to back them up. Nobody is "FUCKED!" by losing their key, it's a simple procedure to recover it - I just don't have the patience. Before now, the team behind this had NEVER said you needed to extract the key, you're just making up more bullshit to inflate your self-worth.
You're a fucking child and I'm wasting my time with you.

So let me get this right. This device needs to be physically plugged into the X360 mainboard via an SATA cable? So we have to open up our consoles? Unless this is the case, then I don't see how you can say it'll be undetectable. |
sabin1981 wrote: | Yes, that is the case mate =) The device acts as a direct hardware link; you need to open the machine, hook it to the onboard SATA controller. The YT video from the x360key team shows that the device is plugged directly onto the board and without the DVD drive. |

TBH, it makes perfect sense you need the key with regard to the fact that if you want to emulate the drive, you need to actually emulate it. The motherboard is tied to the dvd drive (hence why you spoof drives when you take one dvd drive out and put another in). If you're going to a complete new solution (i.e running off a HDD) then it has to pretend to be a DVD drive; the dvd drive tied to the machine. If you don't, you'll never be able to read a disc.
Obviously, I can't prove this but it makes sense from everything we know about how the standard drives.
Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz - 32GB Kingston HyperX - Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - EVGA GTX 980 TI SC 6GB - Asus ROG Swift PG278Q

As sabin said, it was mentioned as a DVD pass-through. To me this means it would not require the Drive key as the drive would still be authenticating itself, while the x360key would provide the game Data. This is why everyone was initially so excited. A plug and play solution.
If it requires the Drive Key, i would just stick to flashing the drive, and using verbs. IMO.
It was never mentioned or implied previously that you would need the drive key.

Any time you have encrypted traffic there is no such thing as a pass-through - that's why you are encrypting the traffic to begin with. The device in the middle needs the encryption keys to decrypt the traffic coming in and to re-encrypt the traffic going out. FYI it's a very typical scenario with SSL encrypted websites using load balancers.

That might be but in the rest of the article it doesn't state anything about it. It does go into what the device is though
xbox-scene wrote: | Q: x360Key Drive Emulation?
A: x360key is 2nd generation Optical Drive emulation tech with a brand new Emulation Engine (x360 is very different to Wii, from the hardware interface to the drive commands).
We took all the experience from designing Wode and started again from the ground up to bring you the 2nd generation of ODD emulation technology on the xbox 360 console. |
If thats the case, then yeah the key will be required.

That article is from the 8th of May, none of that information was known when the device was first announced. Indeed, this is the first concrete information given since the announcement.

Well, I would think that the very first video shown would have been enough of a clue that it wasn't necessarily just a pass thru system - no drive connected.

I say guys save your money and these extra bucks to get a JTAG... Even if it's a little more expensive, in the end it will bring something more than this DVD ROM emulator
