Naw, the bans are machine bans - the flashed drive may have prompted it, but in the end it's the machine that is banned and not the drive.

I'm suprised ms has managed to reflash the fw via software, pretty damn clever but they took their time! With the ps3 scene on hold and now this. This is going to be interesting time!

Could you not remove the drive, do the update and then put it back, or would it need one in to update (I have no idea)? Not going to save you the trouble of opening it up, but you wouldn't need to flash it again.

I guess they had to because size limitations of the dvds were becoming problematic. They didn't 'till now because they knew that as soon as they did it hackers would find out the commands to trigger drive flashing without soldering and replicate them, so they held back until it was really necessary.

I think the console doesn't boot without the drive but I could be wrong.

Ah, I presumed that it would at least boot - I thought it would be the same as when you have a drive that's been wiped. Oh well.

But what happens if you unplug the drive while the console is already running? Does it freeze?

You mean boot console, remove drive, install update?
Dashboard updates usually involve an automatic reboot, having no drive attached during that reboot sounds dangerous no matter whether it's possible...

The update will fail without the drive, and it will fail without the original firmware.

updating with a spoofed drive results in a dead drive as it flashes the wrong firmware from what ive read.

You can pretty much expect all new games to use XGD3 now.

soo any game that uses this now? Not as I know yet. So there is no point accepting the update yet(tho there is nothing worth trouble and there is no solution yet)

Geow3 might use xgd3 tho ?

Nope, it's been pushed for Q3-Q4 2011. If I remember correctly this was announced last year. I'm pretty sure it will use XGD3 though...

Simple question:
This has probably been answered many times here, but the wall of text about everything here confuses me.

Is there some simple method to make my 360 play downloaded games without me having to open it?
Like some software type of hack?
Or what is best and/or cheapest method?
Also, does all 'hacks' ban you from xbox live?

I hate you.

Nope. Sorry, nothing you can to play games unless you open the machine and flash the drive. As for being banned; nobody truly knows. It's a good bet that flashing the drive will raise flags at MS and you *may* get banned ... or you may not.

JTAG is an instant ban though.

So what have to be done to flash the drive? Just take it out of the box and plug it in the PC?
I've built a few million PC's before, so that should be easy I guess?

Also, I only use the live thingy like 3 times a year.
Last time was a few months ago when a buddy asked if I wanted to play forza 3 online.

But is there some hack I can turn on/off?
so if I play pirated games, I just unplug the network cable, and if I play original, I plug it back in?

And good places with guides/info about all this shit?

I hate you.

YES you can play downloaded games without hardware modification, but ONLY games-on-demand or XBLA games that have been released with a hacked profile
install over a usb stick
for DVD-based games you need the hacked firmware

unplugging the network cable won't do any good since the ban is marked on the console itself and if you're caught, you'll be banned the first time you go online

You can't even play no-JTAG games any longer.. MS fixed the hacked profile glitch. You needed to sign into XBL anyhow.

ok, so I don't care about the live thing. I'll just never connect the network cable.
Which is best/most supported/easiest way to flash my drive?
I can't really find any good guides/info about this shit :\

I would suggest checking out the Jungleflasher tutorial off there site.

http://www.jungleflasher.net/downloads.html

Includes a nice walk-thru so you should be up and running in no time
