Square Enix looks set to announce a new Carmageddon game, after a countdown timer appeared on the game's official website.

The violent vehicular combat series hasn't seen an instalment since 2000's Carmageddon TDR 2000, and a planned fourth instalment was cancelled before its planned 2005 release.

According to the countdown clock, all will be revealed on June 1 - just before the carnage of E3.

Played the shit out of those games. Crossing my fingers this turns out good.

Last time I played them was...well, last year Smile

Edit:

Square Enix publishing?

I have a feeling they meddle too much into developer affairs. Having my doubts now.

Well, with SE it's likely that a PC version will be released but I think the game will be developed by people who never played the first Carmageddon's and thus will be ruined completely.

Sorry to bring the sad news to you guys, but I hacked Square Enix's servers and found this interview:

Quote:
Q: I'm here with Mark Teal, the producer behind the upcoming Carmageddon title. It's been a while, huh?

A: Yes, definitely too long. (laughs) It’s been like 11 years since the last Carmaggedon game, and we at Square Enix are very excited to deliver the sequel.

Q: When have you started working on new Carmageddon? Why did it take so long?

A: We started working on it in late 2007. I had a conversation with Derek Bullard (one of the line producers for the first Carmageddon) and it somehow went through with Square Enix. As to why it took so long- it’s a tough question. As you may notice, racing games are returning to their roots- players don’t want to race down the street, but on the racing track instead. That’s a big problem for us, because a huge part of entertainment in Carmageddon was mowing down pedestrians.(laughs) We wanted a fresh start though, so at first glance the new Carmageddon may be different from its predecessors, but we wanted to sustain the original’s atmosphere. Everything is dark, dangerous and gory.

Q: Are there any big changes that we can expect?

A: As I said, we wanted a fresh start. Carmageddon was a niche product really, and very brave for its time. However, today’s players don’t want just crazy gore, but a great story with memorable characters. We simply couldn’t do it with the old formula. We created a new character (we will be releasing the trailer in the nearest days) and an involving storyline. What I can tell you is, you will be surprised.

Q: Really? Not even a little hint?

A: I’m probably going to get killed for this. (laughs) Alright, the story involves the actual Armageddon, with the main protagonist taking part in the last race of his life. The city the game’s taking place in is modeled after a huge amount of actual racing tracks. There are about 20 missions, from which you can expect 8 to 10 hours of gameplay. Each mission takes place in a different stadium, as the player progresses through the ranks of a a championship- Carmageddon.

Q: So you’re switching the formula around? There’s no mowing down pedestrians in the newest incarnation?

A: We didn’t want to alienate the old fans, so we created a new challenge mode, dedicated solely for the purpose of destruction. But no, no killing innocent guys in the main story. I mean, technically you can do it, but you get punished for doing so. We also included a T mode, which is a perfect thing for parents concerned about violence. If you switch it on, the game changes completely. The graphics get cell-shaded look, the game itself gets easier, there’s no blood and no swearing. I’d even call it Mario Kart-esque. This setting is switched on by default, and if you want to take it off, you need to call our support line so we can confirm that you're 18.

Q: That’s certainly interesting. When is the game going to be released?

A: Late 2011.

Q: Platforms?

A: Carmageddon is going to be Wii exclusive.

Q: Mark Teal, thank you for your time.

A: Don’t mention it.

By the way, I really, really really hope they started fresh instead of picking up where Crude Awakening left off - that stylized, cartoony crap looked just terrible. Car customization was much better than in most racing games, but if I had to choose between that and a selection of wacky, wildly different cars that old Carma games had, I'd definitely go with the latter.

http://www.unseen64.net/2009/12/17/crude-awakening-xbox360-ps3-cancelled/ for some concept art etc. in case you haven't heard of it before.

Lucky you, Square Enix isn't involved at all, the rights are now owned by the original development studio.

A source familiar with the matter said that Square Enix has nothing to do with the next in the Carmageddon series.

Developer Stainless Games has negotiated all rights to the action IP away from Square, owner of original publisher Eidos. The Carmegeddon website is now owned by the studio, not Square Enix, contrary to reports over the weekend.

The game will be announced before E3, but won’t be on show in LA.
The site counter points to June 1, so you can probably work out when you’re going to get a first look at it without overly taxing your teeny brain.

Stainless is now concerned with producing downloadable titles based on existing IP, such as Magic: The Gathering and Risk. It’s likely the game will be downloadable, given the studio’s recent track record.

The original Carmageddon released in 1997, and achieved notoriety by getting censored in many countries, including the UK and Germany.

Gameplay is centred on post-apocalypse car racing, but players can achieve higher scores by killing pedestrians.

Stainless produced a 1998 sequel, Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now. A third entry, Carmageddon TDR 2000, was developed by Torus Games in 2000. All three saw broad multi-platform release.

Yep, Carmageddon.com was turned over to "Driving Game IP Ltd" last month, the company itself was previously registered as "Stainless IPR Ltd", and the registered address for the company is ~5 miles from the Stainless Games HQ.

Every game is downloadable Cool Face

Yeah Razz but the fact that it's probably an indie project/low budget/downloadable title doesn't sound very good :/
