It was about time.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304563104576355310423496054.html

Quote:
Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play.

Activision executives said they haven't yet figured out how much to charge for the service, but they expect the cost to be less than fees for comparable online-entertainment services, such as a $7.99-a-month Netflix Inc. movie subscription. Portions of the service will be free, including features inspired by Facebook Inc. that will let "Call of Duty" players meet for online gun battles with others who share various affiliations and interests.

Another feature of the service will give "Call of Duty" players tools, modeled on those from stock-trading websites, to analyze their performance within the game, gauging factors such as which weapons have been most successful for them in killing enemies.

Quote:
In an interview, Activision Chief Executive Bobby Kotick said he isn't worried about pushback from gamers about the Call of Duty Elite fee because players will still be able to compete against each other online without subscribing to the service. While he is coy about many of the offerings that will be included in the service, Mr. Kotick said Call of Duty Elite, and the customer-service operation that will be needed to support it, wouldn't be possible if the service was free. "This is an enormous investment," he said.

CoD: Elite huh? Fuck yeah, now me and my bros will be 3l1t3 Smug

Without a monthly subscription service to get quality content who will buy EA's game?

I think you guys show my sentiments for this shit with accuracy.

Hanyway, who feels like joining the elite? Cool Face

They'll get permanent online stat tracking .... something hl2 based games have for fucking ages, if the server admins want it. And they'll charge for it. Valve can't make their next multiplayer shooter fast enough, for fucks sake!

They'll charge like 5$ for this shit, and people will eat it up like hot donuts. I hope CoD fails and dies a miserable death, along with Activision.

It's impossible to fail Laughing

Online play remains free (thankfully!) so it won't be like people will say "oh fuck that, I'm not buying the game".

I mean they won't lose any of their customers, what will happen is that some of them will subscribe. If 500.000 subscribe x let's say $5 x 12 months = $30M/year profit Laughing

And lets face it, everyone, who pays with their mother's CC (~12 year olds) will subscribe... now that I think about it, that's around 85% of their players!

and the mindset across the pond ( and sadly more and more everywhere else ) is that as long as they got the money they spend it, value versus price isnt rarely an issue to them. as long as its a small amount ( up to 15 bucks, basicly what they spend on a meal ) its cheap to them, best example is pets on wow, it doesnt matter its a stupid non combat pet, $3? whatever, thats nothing !

companies know that and prey on it.

I'll bet they'll really be surprised once the whole thing blows up in their face and the majority will dump Call of Duty in favour of Battlefield.
Though i'm expecting most Xbros to eat this shit up like they always do..
I'm rather curious which nfohump member will subscribe even for a month, i bet some of you pathetic fuckers that right now complain about it will do it.

Yeeeeah...... This won't ever work in the longrun. For this title, perhaps, but when other companies start doing the same it will start getting a little costly for commonfolk and people won't be able to afford playing. So many people don't play wow because of the monthly fee Laughing will be interesting to see how this is received by people.

Hyper-realistic FB integrated game - imagine posting a status update through game - "I just killed 12 russian pigs in NY - w00000t!!11"

That would really BE realistic.
