9gb is not a lot of space when the consoles are going high definition... especially when most games completely fill their media now....

exactly. a consoles life span is longer than 2-3 years.

i thought that it actually was nintendos choice of media type that invited ps to get such a huge share of the market.

Won't using BluRay discs also prevent piracy?

i m sure it will take only a few months if not weeks for the first 9 GB+ game to get released on ps3, come on with the transition from psx to ps2 the games'
media usage became more than twice the size, the biggest games on psx like
ff9 used 4 full discs (x-files used 5 but that doesnt count, it wasnt a real game bleh) which was 2,6 GB max, while on the ps2 there are games like shadow hearts 2 and star ocean 3 which take up more than 7 GB (xenosagas dont count as most of the space is used up by fmvs, thats not a good comparison).
high quality textures and sound take up a shitload of space, the texture quality of ps3 can be expected to be the same improvement as ps2 textures over psx ones. if xbox 360 is really going for "simple" dual layered dvds then the console
will walk the gamecube path and risk alot!
btw hardware-technically ps2 was a big failure and there still was a huge difference between ps2 and psx, now all the devs are goin crazy over the ps3 hardware so we can expect some damn good quality, and hence some damn huge media usage.

Why is this such an issue?, name any game that fully takes up a dvd9 even now. Most games that do use DVD9 format already barely take up more than 5 gig out of 8 gig, yeah maybe in another 2/3 years time we may see something that outstrips what a dvd9 can hold game data wise, but we won't be seeing loads i bet
Also DVD9 is a established format which now have lower production costs for hardware and media meaning MS wont lose out so much on production costs on the xbox360 where Sony will with its new tech.
After all it never harmed Nintendo did it who out of the 3 had the lowest storage capabilities - just look at Zelda and the likes |
Umm, its called Next Gen consoles. And alot do take up DVD 9 now. One would be smart enough to know that every generation consoles expand in each of their departments. In this case, they have the power to run the Unreal 3 engine. So yea, I'd say while progress of things become more graphical, and more things are used to make it run, more cutscenes, more voices, etc. everything plays in a role of takin gup space. So yea, there will be fully 9 gb games.
How exactly will MS not lose out but Sony will? In case you dont know, production costs lower the longer something is out, and the more it is used. However, if anything Microsoft screwed up. They hired a graphics company with the original XBox that was NVidia who pretty much priced themselves out on production of XChips. Now why would Microsoft do that and take losses per unit? In cases like that, it wasnt a thing of production costs, but more like pricing themselves out in the beginning. And you guys forget that Blu-ray is developed by Sony, so why the fuck would they screw themselves over? Their the same company.
Nintendo fell in a slump and what hurt them this generation was they screwed up. They offered a system in which the games it had noone wanted apart from Mario, Zelda, and Metroid Prime. Than they developed RE4 which was made around the GC hardware. They have no interest in RE other than to try to make people buy their system, to atleast make up for its huge loss. I actually like Nintendo though. I feel sorry for them. The worst part is the gamer fans. If anything, they betrayed Nintendo along with the fall. Alot decided to bash them and become fanboys of systems such as XBox and PS2. This doesnt apply to all Nintendo fans, but quite alot. But seeing the new Zelda game, I have to say wow. That looks awesome. I wish they had a shitload of Zelda games developed for GBA though. That would be fun. I'd like to play a new adventure every month.

Quote: | According to a report by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the next-generation format war may be over before it ever starts. The Japanese newspaper on Thursday published with news that Sony and Toshiba are expected to make an announcement later this month that they have abandoned the Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats respectively and are working on a new medium that will bring together both standards.
Sony, a leading member of the Blu-ray Disc Association, announced last year that it would include a Blu-ray drive in its forthcoming next-generation console, PlayStation 3. More than 100 companies, including Apple, Panasonic, HP, and Pioneer, support Blu-ray, which promises up to 50 gigabytes of storage on a single disc side. Toshiba leads the opposing format, HD-DVD.
While it is commonly accepted that Blu-ray discs offer more storage space than HD-DVDs, electronics companies and Hollywood studios have remained divided over the two formats due in large to the manufacturing processes. In short, the DVD infrastructures already in place would serve HD-DVD manufacturers. However, costly new facilities and operations would need to be created in order to support the Blu-ray format.
Sony and Toshiba have remained in negotiations on the subject for weeks, with key company executives from each camp dropping hints that a unified standard would be optimal.
The Nihon Keizai Shimbun reports that, having reached an agreement that a new, unified standard would be the best thing for the industry, Sony and Toshiba are now in the process of designing the new standard, which seeks to take the strengths from each medium and combine them.
Sony has reportedly suggested using Blu-ray's disc structure and HD-DVD's software technology while Toshiba has suggested keeping HD-DVD's disc structure and applying Sony's multi-layer data-recording technology.
The Japanese paper reports that both companies are eager to reach an agreement in order to avoid the format wars that initially confused consumers and hindered both the VHS and DVD eras. The two electronics giants have already briefed major Hollywood studios including Disney and AOL Time Warner on the idea of a new, unified standard, according to the paper.
The big question is, what does this news mean for PlayStation 3, which is scheduled to release sometime next year? The very probable answer is that the next-generation machine will drop Sony's announced Blu-ray drive in favor of hardware that instead plays this new, still-announced format compromise. |

everyone I know (who doesn't know much about technology) is planning on buying the Xbox 2 because it will be out so much sooner... I have a feeling that this will be the choice of most people out there... People are idiots and don't have patience... they'd rather have a dollar now than 10 dollars at the end of the week... I think sony waiting this long might significantly reduce their customer base (obviously it won't put them out of the picture, but I don't think they will be a strong #1 anymore, perhaps not even #1...) hmm

It's not like it's coming out a week, or even a month later cheez-dick. It's a long time to wait, and not everyone wants to sit around waiting for some console release 6 months in the future to play next-generation games. It certainly doesn't mean they're idiots. It means they live for the now, because as we all know, 'you're a long time dead'.

Not my fault I can outpoint anyone with valid arguements. And sometimes you have to spell out things because certain retards dont understand. They either bring up old news, or just totally misunderstand what you say.

I believe it will use Blu-Ray. The DVD capacity needed for next gen games will be huge. Thats only logic man. I havent heard anything lately about them using a diff media type.

looks very nice for one of the first titles, the animation isnt very realistic
but the shadows and lighting effects sure are nice, the facial expressions are interesting too, i wonder what games are gonna be shown on the e3 in a couple of day.
