- Destructible Environments (with the new weapon in the series: a sledgehammer)
- Sprinting (press Shift)
- Aiming down the sights (for the weapons that do have sights)

Also as already said for the moment they are only making and demonstrating the PC version:

Quote:
"You can hit the Shift key to sprint," he says. "Wait, what?" I ask like some kind of crazy person. But he was right: There's a sprint now and it's immensely helpful against the droves of Beheaded Kamikaze charging toward me.

If the default pace is a bit slower then sprint (I guess it's limited or such.) is understandable (Your character "walked" or rather nearly rushed through the First and Second encounter titles plus jump, strafe and all that to avoid getting hit.) to reach a faster pace again but that's just a guess, game looks impressive but we'll see how later videos and previews turn out as the game gets closer to the release date later this summer (Or was it autumn now?)

I guess the sledgehammer is another little easter-egg or such reference and in this case towards Red Faction, will be fun to read the item description for it to confirm this. Razz

Unlikely, the whole intro was removed from the HD version of SS:SE, and according to their forums it's because they felt it was silly and they want to distance themselves from anything silly after making SS2, that they even made this change to SS:SE HD.

Ney, it's going to be a proper FPS, a proper Serious Sam game, a proper sequel. Croteam still loves pc gaming it seems, that's why I love them as developers. I never was attracted to Duke Nukem games like I was to Serious Sam games. I grew up with these and I think they're more fun than Duke Nukem games. Duke should learn from Sam in my opinion, not the other way around, hehe.

A summary of new details: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=28500512&postcount=1

Quote:
-40-80% of the environment is destructible, both by you and by the enemy hordes, which will actively break it down to get to you
-Weapons:
--No chainsaw or knife, just the sledgehammer and new melee kills
--New shotgun that fires explosive shells
--The minigun, double-barreled shotgun, rocket launcher, and cannon all return
--No sniper rifle, the assault rifle's scope takes its spot
--Croteam is toying with a Duke Nukem pipe bomb-esque C4 charge that may or may not make it in
-Levels up to 3x the size of First Encounter's biggest
-There's a sprint function
-Retailing for less than $60

Sounds awesome!! Very Happy

Also apparently 2K was responsible for the bad "humor" lol wut of SS2.

Quote:
Serious Sam: The First and Second Encounters heralded a glorious golden age for FPS gaming. Croteam’s classics threw exposition and caution to the wind; letting us engage in an orgy of carnage, circle-strafing and gunplay in its purest form. Sadly the sequel was rightfully panned for taking an overly comedic and humorous approach… and once I’d taken my seat within Los Angeles’ luxurious Figueroa Hotel, the Devolver Digital rep explained that Serious Sam’s former publisher, 2K Games, had put undue pressure on the developers to make their game less serious. Now shacked up with Devolver, Croteam have free rein to “make the game they always wanted to make.”

The chainsaw and the sniper will be missed Sad. Also, I keep seeing that a lot of you guys think Serious Sam 2 wasn't that good. Why is that? I personally loved it as much as the first two games. It would be nice if they would remake SS2 with the Serious Engine 3.5 after they finish with Serious Sam 3 though.

The humor (and that includes not only the script, but also the comedic elements in the enemy design, level design, etc) was at times very annoyingly silly.

It's not a fan favorite.. I think they'd prefer to work on a new game instead of remaking SS2.

Also 2K still has the publishing rights to it (which is the reason the game hasn't been published on Steam, GOG, etc, if it were up to Croteam they'd definitely put it online like they did with their previous games) so it's not going to be possible at all until the rights revert to Croteam (if that was part of the contract, but likely it was).

I see. A shame really, that engine really shines and they could rework everything in the game to make its style as it was in the previous games that way, if you say that was the problem with the game.

Erm, the only Duke FPS came out 5 years before the first Sam did. I don't know how the fuck you can say Sam attracted you more than the Duke games, because there is only one remotely comparable Duke game (excluding DNF), and that's half a decade older :/

Well, I said Duke Nukem games and by that I mean all the games, not only the FPS. Used to play a lot of Manhattan Project for example. I know their not in the same genre, but they still share that mindless shooting element.

Some moar info: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=28702578&postcount=35

Quote:
Undercode is doing SS3's boss music.

For the people who aren't enormous Serious Sam nerds and don't get what that means, Undercode is a Croatian metal band that released their first album the same year The Second Encounter was in development. Croteam tracked them down and got three of the tracks from that album reworked as TSE's boss music.

Apparently they've also written a theme song for the series now.

They're also finally working on a second album.

Quote:
Just to explain a few things that seem to be misinterpreted:

Without pressing the sprint button, Sam already runs very fast, like in TFE/TSE (which is much faster than in "realistic" games). Sprinting is added on top of that, and is useful for large area exploration, speedruns, and similar. If we allowed for firing during sprinting, then there would be no need for a separate button which everyone would just hold down all the time. We could just make the default speed higher. But it already is very high.

Reloading can serve two purposes. One is to allow a weapon to have a higher rate of fire, without outbalancing other weapons (because average total rate of fire is still the same, while short bursts can fire a lot of bullets in quick succession). Weapon drawbacks are one of basic tools of a game designer in creating an interesting game. This approach brought a lot of interesting details in previous games: minigun spinup, double-shotgun reload after each shot, cannon holding longer for stronger shots, etc.

Another is to introduce more complex and interesting rhythm into fights. It breaks a steady rhythm of shots with a different beat that happens at regular intervals. This does not dumb down the action - it makes it even more frantic. Just when you thought you have the situation under control - you are out of clip. Your "dance" has to be more complex and adrenaline rises higher. It also makes you care more about not missing. E.g. if a particular weapon takes X shots to take down one enemy and you have a clip of N, in a wave of them, you have N/X kills per clip. One miss usually means you've lost the count and lose one enemy per clip. This can make a big difference when playing on high difficulties and gives greater opportunity for differentiation on leaderboards. Note that it is only available on select few weapons where we deemed it was beneficiary to the gameplay.

While some people may think it would be best that absolutely nothing was changed, it would then be boring and feel like it is just a new set of levels for HD:TSE. So we decided to change a few things taking care that the changes actually improve the action gameplay, not hinder it. I hope everyone will try those things in actual game for a while before making final judgment. In our tests this really works well.

It was only one level I played, but it was a level true to the original games, which in turn were true to the classic shooters of the mid-nineties, and enormous fun. Of course it required running backward, of course there were ridiculous volumes of enemies, and of course I was stuck with the echo of that Kamikaze screaming in my head for the rest of the evening.
