The more you think about it, the less sense it makes. If a Generation X, generation Y folk (whatever they call it, people that are 25-30 now and younger) hears "You shall worship god" the immediate answer is "Go fuck yourself". For a society it makes no sense to accept such stupidity.
And I don't know if it has anything to do with indoctrination because people always say "you have to see it in the context of the era, people get used to it, you don't know better etc". But I am quite sure people with fucked up feet, especially only women and no men, see that it can be different, better and less painful.
Let's take religion. I am 25 now, and I can remember being 10-12 and 'having the pleasure' to endure catholic shizzle at school. I can remember me having baaaaaaaaaad points for religion and having 100% for mathematics 10 consecutive semesters, so I was not 'just stupid'. I can also remember me thinking 'This is utter bullshit, no one makes 1 fish to 10 fishes', 'what the fuck God, there is no god, we were in space and took pictures of the earth and there is no god'.And my parents were not forcing me this, because they went to the church now and then, not frequently but they were no anti catholics either.
So it is very striking to me that I had a critical view on the predominant things in society at an age where you can be easily manipulated. Now 10-15 years later, there is no religion left, whatsoever. And even back in the days I remember we had jokes about priests humping children and little boys, so I really do not understand why people are surprised all of a sudden when the shit hits the fan.
There must have been a real sense of hypocrisy in the past and 'let's deny the truth so it goes away'. Anyone who can recommend me a good book on those subject because I really really really do not understand 95% of the crap that went on in the past. Loads of misery could be avoided by simple means and nobody did so.

but I think what your missing is in 100 years, people will look back at us for things and say the same thing. every few generations looks back on the last few and goes "those poor poor naive souls". I'm sure the people that did foot binding did it of people before them, just as I'm sure there is things me and you take as perfectly normal (cant name any of them because we see them as normal) and future generation will do the same to us for it.
as for books, read Richard dawkins books,
all of his book are great at explaining and unraveling the human mind, and why be believe or believed certain things as true despite science/logic saying otherwise. be it humans pattern finding instincts..our "social morals" infused into us being confused with "well god must have given me right from wrong"...etc.
the only difference between a mythical god and today's god is that some still believe in today's god, one day he will join the ranks of thor, odin, loki, etc as being "oh we know hes fake..but people USE to think he was real".
