Is the gore better than the demo? I mean are there bullet holes when you shoot enemies, and does blood splatter on walls and floors?

PC = non-derp quality Smug

The console ports, and especially the PS3 one, were handled by a third party, Piranha Games, they probably suck.

He is obviously talking out of his ass.. no developer ever was honest about what the length of a game was its always way shorter.

Well the guy said he's at Duke's burger after having played 4 hours, according to the leaked 2009 docs he has played through 9 levels and he has 17 to go until the end of the game.

He's not anywhere near the end of the game.

what leaked docs ?

After development froze in 2009, leaked concept art, leaked animation tests, leaked docs with descriptions of the whole levels and the percentage of completion etc appeared online..

I know it's already been said, but man, I think the original Duke Nukem 3d had less jagged edges than this!! I'm usually not a gfx fanatic, but at least on the 360 it looks like it's rendered @320x240 or something like that... not to talk about textures and animations... there are games on the ps2 that look better than this.

Gameplay is more or less the same as it was back in the 90's, only with less weapons, less items, less exploration and less secrets to find.
All in all, duke's one-liners are all that is keeping me playing right now, and I doubt they'll keep me going till the end of the game. Frankly, fuck gearbox. This was supposed to be the FPS of the millennium, and it turns out it's a budget title that should be sold for 5$ in a bargain bin.

There it is, played for an hour or 2, everytime when you die, the loading takes AGES on PS3.

Not so fun after all, Think the demo was only the fun stuff, don't see any real laughing fun stuff in the full game though.

2 Hours played, Game for me: 6/10 (12 years of programming, still a crappy game, thanks!)

EDIT: Think I like RF:Armageddon alot more.

Gearbox were not the one that made this, it was 3DRealms, Gearbox just put what was already done together. Anyone that thought this was going to be game of the millennium needs a reality check.

True, but it really is shit. I loved duke nukem 3d but I was what 15? DNF feels very very dated, graphics are shocking and the sound is trash. I'd say play for the story but its duke nukem Very Happy

i wonder what the reception would be if this game came out when it was announced all those years ago. i think people are holding onto that one duke memory and want a certain duke3D nostalgia...

I think it plays like a duke game should.

You think? I don't know that I agree. The original duke3d had much better level design for one thing. You really had to explore the level, find secret passages, keys, unlock doors, ecc, and enemies often were cleverly placed behind doors and corners to take you by surprise. This one is just the usual linear succession of big rooms: you enter one, kill a few bad guys, door unlocks, repeat.
This extreme blandness and linearity in the level design imho already make the game dull and repetitive enough, without considering all the other problems like limited inventory and bad graphics.

You're right when you say people looked forward to this due to nostalgia, I did myself, but that makes it even worse: I was ready to overlook some little flaws in order to enjoy a classic duke experience, but the game is so bland I can't force myself to liking it, even through the filter of nostalgia goggles.

Yeah, and it was never supposed to be either. It was a game that had huge troubles and it's lucky they got it out at all.

True, but that's the magic of hype, it raises expectations far beyond what would be logical. Razz And then when the mediocrity of the actual product hits you, it butthurts much more Laughing Crying or Very sad

Then that's your fault and not 3DRealms/Gearbox's. Anyway, I've watched some direct capture footage from the x-box on YouTube (up until the shrunken duke bit) and it looks exactly what I was hoping for. Looks shit loads better than the demo. Still no idea about how the gore level is though.

True, it's not their fault if I had high expectation, however it IS their fault that the game is mediocre at best.

Ok so I have been playing this on the x360, and here is my mini review (really mini, cos I'm lazy):

It's much better than the demo, by a factor of 10. I will not comment on the graphics because we all know what to expect here - besides, graphics don't make a game.

I was really glad to see plenty of puzzle elements within the first main level - something alot of people were worried about. Furthermore, Duke is as funny as ever. It really does feel like old Duke 3D. The levels / environments are, for the most part, a homage to the old game - and really give you a feel of nostalgia. While the graphics aren't great, the environments are pretty interactable and loads of stuff can be played with just like in the olden days.

I guess the game is pretty linear, but then so was Duke 3D so you can have it every way!

In general, it's a worthy successor and I recommend a good play-through, even if not just to play a little part of gaming history!

I took the plunge, have to say I wish I hadn't..

My take is that Duke is a missed opportunity, instead of taking Duke forward its taken the player back to the 90's and sadly too well. The game is truly more for the Duke fans than anyone else, they will defends its limitations but if you take Duke Nuke'em off the label and had paid a standard full price for this then you would be rather pissed off.

Devs simply rarely get the right mix when updating an old game, take Star Raiders on XBLA, the game is a budget shooter that has NOTHING to do with the original game, bar the name and a few references its nothing more than a tacky game.

They did the same with Yars Revenge, these people need to remember to mold it around the original game, beef it up, add more options, make it prettier but never remove the whole framework that people enjoyed about the original.

What's happened to Duke is the opposite, they have tried to make the game so like what was before they forgot to update it, budget game looks don't justify a full price. The graphics are a problem, Duke is meant to be 'Bad ass' and the 360 would have allowed for beefing the look of the weapons and the look of Duke himself as well as the environments but sadly it looks like they used the same gfx from the start of the remake all those years ago.

The 'Dukeisms' are ok but some stuff just feels wrong, throwing shit around soon loses its appeal (very soon) and you just wonder how much was put in for 'shock' tactics but failed the Duke test.

Gamewise its simple but ok, the term 'budget' just keeps coming to mind..

Hopefully this won't be the last Duke game, it would be a let down for the whole series if it was. Roll on another Duke but this time use the console to full effect, show how awesome Duke can be, make us all want to "come get some".
