K just finished the game. About 12 hours, and it was epic. Gonna start a few more playthrough with a diff char, making some other choices.

Looking forward to more expansions.

Select the quest to have it tracked, then press R and follow the dots.

It's actually a pretty decent game so far though with a few flaws as pointed out, controls for one thing are problematic and sluggish and it is a rather linear progression, also plays like a streamlined Neverwinter Nights 2 more than it does Dungeon Siege. Very Happy
(Choices and decisions, strong focus on story and in-game lore, companions and influence with them with several possible endings depending on how you decide to go about the various choices presented.)

Fun boss fights also if it weren't for the controls again and overall it's pretty simplistic (Just hack trough everything with little regard to companion behavior, skills and enemy opposition - just manage health and mana/focus "orb" drops and maintain your equipment by upgrading to new items as they are found - HUD is also a bit cumbersome with all the menus but there is quick keys to the more useful areas.)

Many references to DS1 and some to DS2 also even early in the game, even a crypt for the farmgirl (Seems that's been made canon now then, hah) and her struggle those 250 or so years ago. Very Happy

EDIT: I do miss the more open exploration in the past Dungeon Siege games but they do could have you follow a fully linear path but you'd miss a lot of extras that way or alternate routes through certain areas, large range of equipment and of course the possible spells are also noticeable absent in favor of these four pre-set avatars. Smile
(Level design is pretty well done in this game but it was also rather good in the other two DS games with varied environments and creatures, speaking of that they do follow the same pattern to ram every single room and area full of hostile beings but here in this game they can now respawn and do so pretty quickly.)

Gas Powered did try a more focused experience not quite unlike this in their earlier effort (This being Obsidian now however and not the original Gas Powered Games team.) known as Space Siege which didn't fare that well due to also rather simple game mechanics and various other complaints.

Yeah, I'm happy to admit my earlier reservations were a little bit too harsh. I've always been a lover of Snowblind-engine aRPGs -- and this falls pretty much perfectly into that mould. I originally disliked it due to the name, basically, but I sat down to play last night --- and suddenly it was 9 hours later and I realised I'm having an enormous amount of fun. I'm going to buy this, though I'll wait for the price to drop a bit because €50+ is just too much.

The default controls are hideous (sorry, but they are, I just cannot get used to them) but playing with a 360 controller is great - exactly how it was (sadly) meant to be. The visuals are far from poor and the voice acting is excellent.

.... Katarina is massively OP though Laughing

Yeah it would have worked better without that 54.99 Euro type price though that goes for nearly any game these days, yet prices are increasing with over 100 (Though in USD) for some editions of certain games with 60$ and higher now being rather standardized.
(Early on certain games and platforms were of course equally expensive if not worse like say SNES when it launched but then prices dropped as the market changed and other platforms came and went though now it's rising again plus they're adding micro-transactions or mini-DLC on-top of that.)

The game gets a lot harder further in, Azunite Lieutenants will make you throw the controller. >_>

Just started a new playthrough with Katarina. Seems weaker than Lucas was early in the game, but im guessing i'll start 1shootting people as soon as i stack more agi items.

The way I see this; DS3 is to DS1/2, that Dark Alliance was to Shadows of Amn. It's the console version of an old PC classic.

Hm, so it has a (good?) story, lore and choices? I can overlook a simplistic combat system and camera fuckups if those are really present. Tempting.

edit: with "those" I refer to lore/choices and such.

gonna wait to play this i think till they patch up the controls. was reading posts from a dev on sa and i thiiiink that was on the to-do. kindof a sham though, haven't played demo or this and i've got it installed... but i heard about how the control scheme works, and i read about a dev talking pre-release how the game was gonna be designed on pc with proper controls.

i guess proper is a matter of opinion? lol... anywho, glad to hear its at least enjoyable, was tough to believe an obsidian game totally blew rather than partially Razz

It's like several other of their projects, Obsidian tries but have to meet demands from publisher and what else plus it has to sell and they're doing several projects at once.

Interesting way to run that company, seems they're doing OK if a bit messy, Alpha Protocol could have given them their own franchise but they messed that up pretty badly due to poor testing and I guess it was also a bit rushed. Razz

EDIT: Still I assume most development studios try to do their best given the time and budget possible but it has to sell and be popular in order to secure further financing and that means certain cuts or changes I guess.
(Which can be a bit difficult, Jowood was supposedly pretty difficult to work with as a publisher company and larger studios can also likely be problematic and require it be rushed out before it can be fully finalized and tested.)

I wouldn't know though obviously but with big corporations like EA and Activision sort of holding a large part of the market and dominating sales figures by name alone it must be very harsh competition at times forcing poor release windows (Holiday sales chaos and all that.) for other smaller branches.

With multi-million investments you can't do PC exclusives that well either compared to console ones were you have Sony and MS backing the project directly (Assuming they're interested enough I guess.) so anyway what I mean is that things have changed a lot from the shareware and early gaming era. Smile

EDIT: Anyway it's a good effort of Obsidian though the PC version do feel a bit console oriented still due to the previously mentioned design decisions and what else there might be, a patch or two would be welcome but who knows how the game will turn out. Very Happy
(Fallout New Vegas being highly problematic as of 1.3 with tons of well known but totally ignored bugs having to be fixed by fans, KOTOR2 patched together by indie teams and projects like Alpha Protocol abandoned due to publisher disagreements, haha, well whatever it might be clunky but at least it works, most of the time anyway.)

Tons of lore and backstory, though I can't really speak for "choices" just yet. Most of the time it's standard quest fare.

So, to those who apparently enjoy the game so far, which character did you choose ?

When I tried the demo with the archon it seemed pretty damn boring.

They're all fun to play, except for the indian mage, reinhart. He blows.

I had most fun with Lucas tho. Lifesteal 2 hander + active heal w/ vampiric proficiency and blade dash ftw.

What's wrong with Reinhard? Was gonna start over with him since the demon chick is kinda boring to play.

Although, if the game is just 12 hours long I might as well finish it, I'm 6 hours in...

I heard it has local co-op, as in two players on one computer... how does that work, when one wants to go to the inventory or character screen or what not?

The one thing I hate is that we can have only ONE companion active at any given moment. Is there any way to bypass this?

Hopefully modding will fix that, but yeah... it's really annoying. DS1 had a party size of eight, DS2 had a party size of six, DS3 has a party size of TWO -- if that's not a saddening example of "streamlining" I don't know what is.

Even two is too hard to keep track of when you just want to focus on your one character like in Diablo or WoW! lol wut

Just finished it. Man this game was great fun. Epic boss fights, and great ending. Really unexpected for a broken DS follow up.

Just make sure you use a gamepad, or you'll be fighting the controls.
