I blame S-E because they have a tendency or just bad luck to release poor quality sequels eg.: Supreme Commander 2, Kane & Lynch 2 (but IMHO first part was bad too), Front Mission (D)Evolved.

Throne of Agony - haven't played, can't discuss but on vids it's looks more like Dungeon Siege than DS III.

DS-Throne of Agony is practically identical to DS3 =) As for SE? They've made some horrendous decisions, but I don't - yet - blame them for the state of games coming out from development houses they publish. Not yet.

I put blame on SE becuase it's theirs IP not Obsidian's. I don't think that they just gave the developement to them and said do what you want and we will just give you infinite amount of money. Obsidian is just a mercenery, not the best one but (I think) inexpensive. And I put a little blame on Chris Taylor who apparently lost himself after SC 1.

It's more like Chris Taylor and SE wanted to make money from DS franchise and couldn't wait until his team finished working on AoE online.
Obsidian flopped pretty hard with Alpha Protocol and when the rpg idea they pitched to SE was considered too risky they had to bite the bullet.

Maybe I'm imagining things, but it's clearly the publisher leading here. Obsidian has put as much lore and detail as possible in this game, but I think they got the task "make a flashy fast game with tons of action". It has the Obsidian touch, but the higher ups turned it their way. The more I play the game, the more I realize this is one big fucking chance that is missed. The game could've been a lot more.

I didn't even check if the man was involved to be honest Sabin. It just seemed straight off to me that this game was much more an Obsidian game in style then it was to anything CT had done in the past.

I'm probably wrong again, but I would suspect most of his input was probably just to give Obsidian guidance for the backstory/lore of the DS universe not actually to do with any of the gameplay.

He may have not been the best game designer but he was a innovative developer, and always tried to incorperate something innovative into all his past games including DS. This game whilst not a bad game has little to no innovation at all.

As for Square/Enix well they forced Yasumi Matsuno to cut at least 50-70% of the content he had planned for the PSP remake of Tactics Ogre 'Let Us Cling Together'.. Whether it was time or money constraints imposed by them it does highlight how big an impact a publisher can have on a games delelopment.

I can agree on both those points, yeah. DS3 is a damned fun game, but it's not innovative -- and CT most likely just had the "executive producer" position, just to be sure the lore was implemented properly. Still, for those complaining how this trashes the DS name and how it's example of publisher interference, I urge you to play Throne of Agony on the PSP

Honestly, I find the game pretty fun. Have to try it in co-op yet, which I suppose would be even better (not sure if it's possible though, at least with a scene release. Anybody knows if LAN's possible with this?). Perhaps it's because I really didn't like original DS much, but I find the gameplay much more involved. And oh, of course, this one actually has a story I can follow Razz (not to mention tons of lore).

I'm 14 hours into the original Dungeon Siege campaign and I still got quite a lot until the end of it from what I remember. Seriously, it's so much fun now that I've got a decent party Smug. I'm going to probably play Dungeon Siege 2 after this though, I'm not sure if I want to play even that again, because even that is so inferior to this, might as well go through the Legends of Aranna campaign again...

Thing is, it's not finished (as far as I know that is). Most of the siegelets and maps for DS were very promising, but also most of them were not finished, sadly.

I'm playing the original campaign via Legends of Aranna, which is modded with Dungeon Siege LOA Revived 0.9. I have some other mods copied into the resources folder, but I don't know if they work or not as they are for other maps.

I'll try it after I finish the original campaign. I must have read something that was referring to an older version probably.

I think the name "Dungeon Siege" is today only a label used as a marketing instrument. Dungeon Siege II already had lots of different gameplay mechanics making it a very different (in my opinion: far better) gaming experience compared to Dungeon Siege I. Same with Dungeon Siege III. The only thing they all have in common is that they are typical Action-RPGs with focus on monster bashing, leveling, upgrading character and collecting gear with isometric 3D graphics and a party system. And that is the customer shall be remembered by the name "Dungeon Siege".
As much as I like DS3 I am disappointed about the party system. I expected that you could - like in DS2 - take all four characters in your party in higher difficulty grades and control their behaviour.
You can say what you want against DS2, but it had the BEST system for micromanagement and party control with automation options for SIX different characters in your party I have ever seen in a singleplayer Action-RPG. They even included an Elder-Scrolls-like experience system (getting "better" by using skills or items) in DS2.
But wait... that would be far too sophisticated, complicated and not enough "casual"-friendly... for a console game... Sad

DS3 had some moments, but nowhere near DS1/2, I recognize those songs everywhere. The ones I loved, that is.

Replaying Dungeon Siege 2 at the moment. It's SO much better in every conceivable way - except for the dated visuals.

It reminded me of how a decent hack/slash with a decent story should work.

DS3 is a joke in comparison, but it IS "ok" as a light BG:DA clone.

They are working on PC control fixes along with other various issues.

But this actually made me laugh out loud

Quote:
The story is substantially more complex than what you're lead to believe from the demo. You learn more about the complexities of character's motivations later in the game, and while the story does begin with a relatively simple, uncomplicated goal (stop JEYNE KASSYNDER!) there's a lot more complexity revealed later. So I wouldn't really judge the story of the entire game from what you see in the demo.

How about no. There is no complexity, the game is linear and the original uncomplicated goal is still there at the end.
