To remove my CFW, can I just pop the latest official firmware (3.60?) on a USB stick and install that from the XMB? Or do I need to flash the official 3.55 first?

You can go strait to the latest firmware via System Update, or you can put the 3.60/3.65 UPDAT.PUP onto a USB stick and do it from there;
PS3\UPDATE\PS3UPDAT.PUP

I see there's a new ps3 model coming. Looking at the translation (the original listing is in japanese) it could have ps3 compatibility. Slight tweaks to other hardware as well

You would like to think it would.

Its the latest anti-piracy measure
@grimmmy I read somewhere, and I dont remember where that it was a mis-translation the PS2 compatibility, but time will tell I suppose.

Yeah, my bad. Thought that it had it.
Wondered why they'd even bother mention it in the description if it wasn't relevant. Just checked it against the CECH-2500A (which is the model I have I think) and it's got identical wording for that part and it's not backward compatible.

i doubt they will ever make ps2 compatibility available. The only reason they took it out was so they could sell those remastered versions.

Well looks like things are on the up and up; Cobra may have just been reversed by Jaicrab. He talks about a new CFW he's working on, in his blog, and also lists what appears to be the Cobra dongle keys - and his plans to incorporate a payload-free Cobra solution in his CFW.

Now that's interesting Cobra has some nice stuff and I can't wait to see it integrated in a CFW.
i7 3770k, GTX980, 16GB Ram, SSD Raid0, Internet 3rd world shit not worth mentioning

Correction: not keys, hashes. Unknown as to exactly what they're a hash of, but it's definitely something Cobra-related that jaicraB is working on.

It involves the cobra 2.0 as well as he says in one of the comments "I was waiting for the 2.0 version to dump it. The amount of time to finish it ... it could take days."
I'm wondering if its a CFW that'll work on their original usb sticks as well as the new ones?

Explanation of what it does in the words of Mathieulh,
"it enables hidden options and removes restrictions for both retail and debug consoles alike...[he will not release it] For various reasons, one of them being that you can warez with this, and the flag stays even after updating...The QA flag happens to remove a bunch of restrictions that have the side effect of preventing you to warez."

The only thing that could possibly relate to, is NPDRM -- ie, DLC/PSN stuff. Everything else has already been warezed to hell and back, so refusing to release the QA Flag info on the grounds of "it only does piracy" makes no sense to me.

what I meant is cant we use the QA method, whatever that is, to play warez on 3.60? unless of course that method also relies on costume signed PKG files. (I was led to believe that this method is different)

Like I said; you can't install non-retail PKGs. No packages; no warez, lol.

Sadly I've been made aware of some new information regarding this QA hack... and it turns out a lot more people knew about, and had, this hack quite some time ago. People I trusted and people who were so outspoken about the "inner circle" hoarding information to themselves.
The current release of the QA Flag is deliberately neutered as well. It's not capable of half of what Math/rms/adrianc claimed it was, as it's only one small part of a bigger picture --- the picture being hidden away, deliberately kept secret by those in the know.
I am absolutely disgusted.

Heh, that sort of behavior really shouldn't come as a surprise anymore. All of the console "scenes" if you can even call them that are full of manchildren.
