I got in the beta last week myself. Overall, I'm liking it. There are some lag spikes during combat, but hopefully that will clear up. It's very WoW like though. The combat is "turn-based" in that you have to select a target to attack. It's not like Age of Conan where you can unload spells or combos whenever you want. The graphics are good overall, but kind of dated. The voice acting is quite amazing however. But if you don't like WoW, you probably won't like SWTOR.

The only reason I wanted to play the beta was to experience the SW:KOTOR-like storylines
Even I never got an invite
1 and 2 are still amazing.

That's not turn based, has nothing to do with turns in fact, so I'm not sure why you're using that term

He is partially correct. The way I noticed, with the global cooldown system in place for abilities, it feels like it were turn based (as in you attack in turns, so does your enemy, but it's not synched).
Like I said, I didn't play much, but the combat so far was an exact copy of WoW, as in, it had a very easy RPG mechanic, all mobs you fought, you had to use the same skill rotation, and the skill rotation itself only had very few useful abilities you had to spam as soon as you could, if you wanted to maximize DPS. There is no diversity, not even kotor depth saving throws, nothing.
I didn't level with the character at all, but I did take a good long look at the ability trees, and it's built up just like WoW once again, you can't really diversify your character, you'll have around 2 tops builds per specialized class, which will be viable.
Folks, the game is very dumbed down, very unoriginal, and probably the only thing, that's worth it, is the story.
Thr graphics are OK for an MMO, imho, nowhere near as good as Conan, but it's ok. Community was very friendly too, but once they open the gates to the 12 year olds, we all know, what happens then.
All in all, if you loved WoW you will love this, and it will be a perfect next game if you ever grow bored of WoW. If you even remotely disliked wow, this game will just piss you off.
BioWare is dead for me.

Been in the beta for about four months now.
My highest character is barely 25, it's really nothing that hasn't been done before. It feels and looks like any other mmo on the market.
I'm still holding out for GW2/TSW in hope that they'll dare try something new.

Call it quasi-turn based then. It's still based on a "turn" system, where there are timers on attacks and you can't unleash moves unless you have a target selected. Honestly, this is my biggest qualm with the game so far. I was hoping it would be "real time" in that you could perform moves and actions even if you didn't have someone targeted. Conan did this and anyone in your attack radius would get hit. Sadly, you can't sit there and do cool moves without actually being in combat.
Played a bit more last night and this game is definitely World of Star Wars. It's as though Bioware wanted to make sure that the game was so wow-like, that it would attract all the WoW players because they could jump right in with very little learning curve.
I find the game fairly entertaining, particularly because of the cool story line and great voice acting. I also like how they have a lot of quests arranged in that as you progress, you get rewards that you can actually use and are generally upgrades. So it looks as though they did a good amount of planning in this regard.
Another cool thing is that you get "tokens" in instances (flash points I think they call them) and in world combat. You can trade these in to vendors for blue (probably better at higher levels) quality gear. You can also modify gear. Light Sabers, for instance, have 4 different modifications and you can custom tailor them to your class or desired spec.
All in all, it's pretty standard MMO stuff that doesn't deviate much at all from WoW. I still find it pretty fun and the casual nature is pretty good for people like me who don't want have a lot of time to devote to endless hours of gameplay. Being only lvl 11 or 12 on my Sith Inquisitor, who is Assassin spec, I obviously haven't tried anything high level yet though. I'm probably not going to level too high and try out a couple of different classes to see how they play, because I don't think there is a way to change your specialization once you chose it. You do this at lvl 10ish and you don't really get to "try" out the advanced class before you must make a decision.

For those in the beta: is the melee combat like KOTOR, where the characters would line up to each other and actually synch animations and the defender would actually parry the attacker's blows? Or is it like WoW, where they just swing at each other, have a lame-ass particle effect to simluate a hit and maybe a bit of a stumble animation from the recepient?

BioWare is no longer BioWare. Since EA bought them the spirit of BioWare has slowly been eroded by EA marketing staff, executives etc... They're being normalised into the EA family, given less freedom and time. :/

When you fight, you can actually reflect projectiles with your lightsaber and there are lightsaber collisions. So if you hit, block or parry, this is conveyed in the what you see visually. So it is more like KOTOR in this regards. I think if you have a shield of some sort, it will reflect damage as well. I've not seen a lot of this, but I do know that there are weapon and projectile collisions in combat.

Because this is what was like in SWG and I'm wondering if animation reflect actual combat (a la KOTOR), and not just hacking the air in each other's general direction and getting a bit of eye-candy when something just happens to connect (a la SWG).

i think he is talking about collision detection models..
well the thing is mmo's usually try and stay clear of such tech due to it being demanding on the hardware... Age of connan used to have this where then people could block bridges with they're mounts etc and make people fall off to the death or stop people passing.
Most go for the "I can run through people" type of game style, and therefore this normaly means other things get a bit slack as well, but overall its a much better smoother gaming experience for the user.

Lightsabers clash and spark when they collide and do not connect with the person when this happens, so yes, they do reflect the combat taking place. The combat is very much like KOTOR in this regards and the weapon collisions help a lot. It's still like WoW in the overall mechanics though.

From what I played, it's nothing like Kotor, purely based on the fact, that your abilities land virtually every time - I've very rarely seen misses. It's a wow lone through and through. Makes me puke, actually.

Been playing today a bit, it feels damn good, its really like World Of Warcraft but in space And i can say that its hard to please me in MMORPG department, i have played WoW since the beginning (quitted like 4 months ago tho). Imo, this is first real "competitor" for World Of Warcraft, every other MMORPG has been failure what i have tried (AOC, Warhammer, Rift, Lotro).
Will definately play more, feels just so good, i love the scifi setting, world sucks you in (absolutely love Star Wars aswell). Go Go Bioware, dont fuck this up, its gonna be very good game.
