Is Piracy Good?
Those Super Meat Boy guys believe piracy is the future. They WANT you to steal their games.
Quote: | McMillen believes that the more people who steal his games, the more will eventually buy them. He sees piracy as nothing more than a huge sampling exercise. "If the game gets pirated heavily, if it's a good game that people really like, they're going to either buy it eventually or they're going to tell other people about it. Either way it's just going to come back to a sale." |

Only really works but for indie games.
Would be a much lower proportion willing to part with $60 after already completing it.

I've always seen piracy mostly like that...
In my opinion, many people who pirate the game and don't buy it wouldn't have bought it even if they couldn't have pirated it so no revenue iis lost, while many people pirate and subsequently buy a game that they might not have bought had they not have had access to a pirated version which is really more like a demo to them in that case.
I always thought it's ridiculously stupid how devs whine about piracy causing this and that much damage in lost sales... I don't see how so many of them can just say... 'oh our game has been pirated 1 million times, I guess we just lost 1 million sales to piracy!'
Thank god some devs are not that stupid.

I tried that meat boy game, but I just got frustrated when I died a couple of times, and I didn't find it that enjoyable altogether so I uninstalled it...
But I'm totally on board with piracy

As said before, it really only works for indie games. They tend to have great replayability and are dirt cheap (compared to AAA titles). On the other end of the spectrum, we have mostly one-playthrough games for 4-5 times the money, that try to milk us more with selling cut content. I agree with what he said, but it's not true to the whole market.
Now if only AAA titles were cheaper and offer a more lasting experience...

Finally somebody who gets it, the problem is now they gave themselves away, practically the only way they can know this is if they pirated games themselves

he should really talk to ubisoft. they are losing out on so much money because of their "fear" of pc piracy. its actually laughable what they are doing.
piracy can be a great thing, just like free games on iphone (in the beginning of the appstore anyway) were a great way to build respect for the developer. people come back, they pay attention, they buy your product in the end if you create great things.
as mentioned through. the pricing has to be reasonable, i have bought VVVVVVVV twice, even though i pirated it first, and completed it, i bought it even though i never planned to play it till months later. same with frozen synapse, and spacechem.

Piracy is just a different form of marketing, and since official demos no longer exist it's also our only way to try games before buying them

Now, that's when this thing works. It doesn't have anything to do with the game being indie or AAA in my opinion.

Good read and I agree. I've bought games before after I tried them out that I wouldn't have bought otherwise. I'm always up to date and informed for the most part and know what games I'm going to buy and which ones I'm not. If it's something I really like, I'll buy it. If I'm "on the fence", sometimes trying something out can persuade me to actually buy it. Also, I bought Super Meat Boy, The Witcher 2, and tons of other games that I could have had for free, but I like supporting devs that care about the PC community.

I don't agree with them. The best way to fight piracy is with price and availability. Many times have I pirated a game because it got released several days earlier in USA. By the time they release it in Europe I've already moved on. Other games I would usually buy at day-one turns out to be complete turds, so after sampling it with a pirate version, because it's ultimately more accessible, I decide not to buy it after all.
It's also damned convenient to buy a game online. You don't even have to leave your house. Another issue is the price of course. Steam is just too expensive and I usually buy my Steam games through G2play.net or other online-outlets.
If they want to stop pirating they need to make their products more accessible, cheaper and not a poor console port. If a game you would normally buy turns out to be mediocre you just won't buy it if you've already sampled an illegit copy.

This. Or at least that's how I handle it most of the time. There might be one exception. If I'm particularly broke (like at the moment) I might not buy the game this instance but I'm (most of the time) sure to come back to it and buy it eventually.

I would have never even heard of minecraft if I hadnt seen a copy posted on usenet.
After playing it, within 3 days I bought a legit copy and subsequently got my brother to buy one.
Thats 2 copies sold that would have never happened if not for piracy.
I agree that the word of mouth aspect is much more useful for indie titles.

Carpe Fulgur (Recettear, Chantelise) responses:
Quote: | I pretty much share this philosophy, by the by
People can either pay us or not, it's in their hands to support us and the original developers of the games we localize. If they do, great; if not, we go out of business and they have fewer games to play. We trust our fans to do the right thing and keep us in business, and we respect that by not putting in any DRM in our games (aside from what's built-in to Steam, and it seems like most of our customers don't give a shit about that and we make sure to offer alternatives for those who do).
DRM in this day and age is beyond pointless. I'm glad the dudes who are pretty close to being the biggest indie devs in the world at this point (outside of, like, Notch) are saying it loud and clear. |
Quote: | Well it's up to you
You can pirate a game, sure, we won't stop you
But if you don't support us financially, you're one more step toward us not being able to work on any more games and having to either leave the industry or die in the streets
So the question becomes
Do you feel what we're worked on is worth anything
And do you feel a need to support that |
Quote: | - And if people just don't ask themselves these questions? Like they saw the game, they pirated it, end of story. They don't think about who made it and if a developer has money to finance another game.
- Then they were never, ever our customers to begin with
Pretty much every hardcore pirate I've ever known hasn't given a shit about where their games come from and never bought a game to start with, we'll never reach those people so why try
And hell, sometimes you DO reach them when you really blow their socks off
You aren't going to "force" someone to pay you money, no matter how hard you try, not without using physical violence, this is a very old real life lesson |
Quote: | That's not actually what they're saying at all if you read the article even a little
Pirates who don't pay are still Uncool Losers who we make frowny faces at, but it's the guys who pick the game up for free and then decide to give us money like the rest of our beloved paying customers who are cool
(We love our paying customers they are awesome and keep us fueled with ramen and coca-cola )
But the real point is, DRM does nothing to stop piracy, so why in the game of goozex even bother to include it at all, it's just a waste of money and effort
And if you're asking "well, if there's no DRM and it's easy to pirate, why shouldn't I?!", then the responding question becomes
How badly do you want to see your favorite devs and this industry continue
Because in the end we're all just begging for your money and support, even those of us who don't openly admit to it
Whether or not you actually do so is up to you |

They aren't stupid; if they WERE stupid they'd say "Oh our game has been pirated 1 million times, but we have no idea who would have actually bought it so it might not have really hurt us at all!" One demonizes piracy and those hypothetical sales that were lost, the other excuses it all.
I think more people would be "fine" with the culture if folks stopped being delusional about it. Everytime I read an NFO with "support the developers. . ." I can't help but think "Yanno if you REALLY wanted people to support the dev's you wouldn't have cracked the game in the first place." The connoisseur of these wares are little better - "Oh hey I bought Triple A game X - so that entitles me to pirate everything else", or "Ahh. . .I'm just trying it out, and after playing it 4 times through I've decided - naw, I don't like it. Whew!"
TLDR - You're still stealing (just like my mom was "stealing" cable when I was young), but since it's not a tangible thing not as huge a loss as thieving from Lil Old Ladies.

I had the same opinion about that line, for a time. Then I learned there are ways to support the developers even without buying their product, like helping with translations, writing reviews, sending bug reports, sharing info over the net etc.
e.g. I myself got a free registration key ($20 worth software) for a well deserved short review on a public site.
