well, there are differences in opinion and there are actually idiots. The "easy" positions are usually also the stupid ones, so it is usually the case that (political) ideologies or religious dogma attracts that kind of people, because it is as far as they can grasp reality.
Also, looking at the issue from the side of the highly intelligent helps. In academia you find the overwhelming majority to not hold ideological or dogmatic positions (i.e. favour political "wings" or be religious) because the intelligentsia knows better.

Most people do not even know the meaning of Racism.
Hitler was a racist, but would you call him an idiot?.
Most " racist " or people who hate our darker skinned cousins are generally only armed with a certian amount of information and cannot argue past simplified arguemnts.
You however find these people among the other side of the spectrum.
In my oppinion and from previous expeprience, both the far left and the far right are equal in terms of idiocy and blindly follow political ideals without froming their own oppinions based on extensive experience, they both employ violence, and they both " recruit " the far right usually recruit from working class, pissed off and disencharted, with middle and upper class take the higher posistions. The Far left indoctrine most of their people from college and universities, I have noticed how subtle and easily recruite gullible and naive students basicly through brainwashing and by support less important ( to the far left ) causes such as animal rights.

Being deluded and being an idiot are hardly the same thing. I'd even go so far as to say you need to be at least somewhat clever to delude yourself. Highly intelligent people are very good at defending and justifying their delusions, and we're all deluded in some way or another. If you lump all negative traits together just because it feels good to do so, you're most certainly deluding yourself.
Hitler was a master manipulator of public opinion, and could even predict and manipulate other world leaders. He was deluded to be sure, but he was far from being an idiot. Some of the other third reich leaders seem more deserving of that title.

Most of the elite nazi dudes were raised in very intellectual and civilized families if you ask me. That's the weird part -- they weren't complete idiots.
