Difference is that CS:S fucked 1.6 up. It wasn't just a new engine and some bugfixes, it was an entirely different game. CS:S is much more like CoD and much less "hardcore" than 1.6 - or to stick with hump slang: derpified.
It's much easier to hit in CS:S because the hitboxes are huge. Recoil is non-existent, running barely affects your accuracy, things like that. It's just far easier to play, especially for an experienced 1.6 player.
This is exactly the same as its predecessor, or at least seems to be so far.
@ Surray: must be different in competitive play. I personally saw a lot I already knew with some useless units replaced by new units; either rendering others useless or still being useless.

Funny how you where discussing CS 1.6 with CS:S and now you start about dota...

They dont care about pro players, they are not the large playerbase.
The game sold quite good compared to most games out there, so yea it worked. |
Worked is very relative, when CS had been on top10 sales charts for the better part of 8 years straight and CS:S hardly scratched that. CS:S was Valve trying to introduce an extremely well known IP but extremely esoteric game in itself to a broader playerbase. This is not the case here. There will be intro and tutorials etc etc stuff that would have been there from day 1 of DotA if it wasnt a 'simple' custom game but the gameplay will not change as it did with CS:S

But thats my point. CS:S was supposed to be CS 1.6 with better graphics but somehow they managed to fuck it up. Their intentions wasn't to mess up the hit box, make maps that were unplayable or drastically change the recoil of weapons. They wanted a better looking CS that would be able to have more pull with the hardware manufacturers as there was little reason trying to sell the newest graphics card when old CS could be run perfectly by an old computer.
I am almost certain that Valve vill fuck up Dota 2 as well, no way will it feel as smooth as the original Dota did and I'm sure several other aspects will also feel completely alien to us Dota players.

Except Valve never marketed CS:S as a successor to 1.6 themselves, it's what we expected as a community. See what I mean?
CS:S was meant to show off how a game *like* CS could look and how easy it was to recreate it on the Source engine

Any matches right now? From dota2.com I get the OK.Nirvana.INT vs OK.Nirvana.CN but doesn't play, just the versus intro.

No, the "genre" started in SC (although I can't remember the map's name), but none of them ever did it half as well as DotA did. Then when it went the "allstars" route it just got better and better with every version. How many different versions of Enzo's are there? And 99% are fucking terrible.
|
Exactly... typical Smikis talking out of his ass again...
First map was Aeon of Strife for Starcraft. Eul copied it to WC3 later under the name of Defense of the Ancients but suddenly he stopped updating it. Loads of Spinoffs emerged with DotA Allstars as the most popular which was made by Guinsoo. DotA Allstars became just DotA again and replaced the old DotA entirely. Guinsoo later gave the project over to Icefrog. Icefrog developed it for many years (and still does). Icefrog joined Valve and started working on DotA2.
AoS wasn't that popular back then. It all started to grow really big with Guinsoo's/Icefrog's version. So infact, DotA did start the genre.

Can anyone point me to a great tutorial vid or something of the likes to explain all this.
I really want to be able to play this as it seems up my ally, but the point of entry just seems insurmountable at this point, even though I'm a pretty hardcore gamer.
I hope they lower the point of entry as SC2 did with their bronze leagues and up, so I could start at 0 and work my way to diamon during the course of the season.

AoS is DotA and DotA is AoS. Seems to be hard to understand.
Yet AoS was very different from the later DotA. So DotA did start the genre as it is.

@ bavelb: Not really, as playing every hero is a game on its own. I've been out of the DotA scene for a while, but dota-allstars.com used to have a ton of guides. I'm not sure where you can find them now, but start with some general item guides. Take some pointers on which heroes are "easy" to play, get a grip for the game's mechanics (last hitting for example). Get familiar with the basic starter items, learn what they do and how to use them - while you do this, keep defensive, don't get cocky and chase enemies. HoN and LoL are just as complex, you need to learn them in the same manner
A lot of items to get familiar with, a lot of basic mechanics. Heroes are the last thing you should get familiar with if I'm honest
@ m3thod: thanks, that's the map indeed!

You do realize the teams are playing for a million USD, right? Of course they're gonna spend lots of time pre-match.
