I didn't quite make myself clear the first time around, I think this move of Notch's is a very good marketing move, having read some of the comments, people are adoring him for his edginess, but this is in fact a calculated move, that will attract more fans, get him in press and eventually sell more of minecraft as well as build brand awareness up for his game scrolls.

Brilliant indeed, if Bethseda refuse they'll be even more unpopular amongst the gaming community.

Because Bethesda made a complete dick move. Are you capable of thinking? How can sueing someone for using one word you have in common be a good thing? |
Don't mind him, it's just Smikis.

Quake Live is the way! Unfortunately it's not going to happen, but Persson's coolness factor just went up drastically

Bethesda won't even acknowledge his ramblings on his blog, there's literally absolutely no reason to do that.
If they do, it will be like they are saying they do not even care that much about the copyright issue, and that will make them look even worse.
So no Notch does not gain anything by this, other than his name being posted yet another time all over the gaming blogs, and Bethesda loses nothing from Notch's ramblings.

Yes it hurts them because their arrogance and stupidity is unbelievable. They ll loose big time.
And there is no copyright infringement if they use part of the same name and the game is totally diffrent, thats the same if a musician would sue everyone that uses just part of the title of his song, its absurd, How many times was "Baby" used in a song title?

Is "The Elder Scrolls" even a widely recognized name anymore? To me and most i know its mostly "Morrowind", "Oblivion" and "Skyrim".
Beth would be stupid to ignore that challenge, would be a great PR stunt and could crank their coolness factor up a few notches.

What will they lose again? "Nobody" is going to stop buying their products because of what they did to "poor" Notch.

First of all they own id software and the Quake Live staff, Bethesda if they wanted can win with closed eyes.
But do you understand how immature that would make them look like? That the fate of their claim was decided with a game, that they could theoretically lose???
Either they are very serious with this matter and believe they have a case or they are wasting everyone's time. Guess which of the two they are doing if they choose to settle this by playing a game.

Not defending them, just seeing behind the curtain like Radicalus does.
If Bethesda accepts the challenge (and no matter if they win or lose the game) they will have already lost their credibility.
This is what Notch is hoping for.

What are you talking about? Who is dumb enough to expect that Bethesda would accept such a riduculous thing? It's just a PR move.

And I never said otherwise. You can search the Skyrim thread where when I read these news I said it's stupid.
But they believe otherwise, and everyone who believes they'll choose to settle this by playing a game is naive.

They were not the first to use the "Scrolls" word in a game. I think I remember a game that used scrolls from specrtum or atari or commodore, Ill look into it.
Found it!
It s called Scrolls of Abadon. So should the creators of Scrolls of Abadon sue Elder scrolls creators for using part of their game name?
That would be funny:)
