Well, can't really fault those other reviewers for pointing out flaws like the pretty horrible AI and how it reacts. The stupid part comes from them saying that these 11 years in-between DE1 and DE3 has magically made AI better, which is bullshit. If anything, AI and environment-interaction remains some of the least developed areas of gaming.

Some context to their comment would be appreciated:
Quote: | Consider, then, all of the things that make up a typical sneaking mission in video games: routed guards; meticulously designed paths; security cameras that point in specific locations with obvious and appallingly short fields of view. It's all here.
Of course the original Deus Ex was guilty of such issues too, and so what's the problem? Well, Deus Ex was released 11 years ago. Times have changed, and such awkward stealth gameplay – especially for a game that is based on the mechanic – is just not enjoyable to play.
Should Jensen get spotted then there's little effort needed to quell the aggression. In most cases, sitting in cover only a couple of meters away until the guards get bored and give up is enough to remain passive; and that's just not how stealth gameplay should work. |
| Too bad that no examples of "proper" stealth are given. I'd like to understand just against what does the game's stealth feels "archaic"...
Probably Splinter Cell: Conviction...

I'd like to see them releasing the game with just that difficulty mode.

http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Deus_Ex_Human_Revolution/index.html
PC bugs:
Quote: | Many, including myself, were concerned with the PC version of Human Revolution coming from Nixxes. I'm happy to report that the PC version plays quite well and looks significantly better than the console versions, running on an ATI 6870 and i7 processor. Using a keyboard to enter codes deepens the immersion level, and the mouse allows for more precise movements. The onscreen hotbar is mostly unnecessary; a conceit by the developers to make the game more like the original without increasing functionality. You can play the game with a pad on PC if you don't like the mouse and keyboard setup, though I see little reason to do so. The PC review build had a glitch with transitioning between running and walking and the inventory management system, but hopefully these problems with either be resolved in the retail edition or with an early patch. I also encountered a few freezing issues and one quest chain completely broke, but Stephen reported similar issues in his PS3 build. |

Why would they need to point to an example of good AI in a stealth based game; the complaint is that "Hey guys your AI is kinda acting the same as AI has acted for the last 11 years - no bueno." Which is a valid complaint.
However their comment seemed tied to the specific example of the AI not reacting to a fairly large distraction. The truth of that I'm not sure of, as shooting the fire extinguishers in the police precint did alert someone - IF they were standing near the thing. Of course their level of awareness - as always - drops off after long enough: "Hmm I guess that extinguisher blew up itself."

The review version you speak of was a preview version. Most of these reviewers have beaten the game. This is what you will be getting in a few hours.

OK, the reviews' scores are top-notch and perfectly expected. I simply need the game. Am I asking too much?

That's pretty good review points. Now I only hope the game sells, and also that people won't mistake it for a ordinary FPS. I still fear we'll see a butchered DX4 if they decided to make that, with a "faster" game style because they "listened to the players"...I do for all that's holy hope that I'm wrong.

So assuming review scores are normally distributed, then a dreaded 8.7 is well centered about the mean - that is is numbers motivate your enjoyment of a game.
