Everton should be in the cl if they finish forth.
having said that the defending team should also be in, but if Liverpool cant make forth then by the rules they should lose out.
Everton lost out in 85, and they shouldnt 20 years on.

Ultimately the rules should have been changed prior to the start of the tournament to allow the defending champions the ability at least to qualify. Either that or put an outright ruling changing it from being at the discretion of the countries FA.
I understand the hesitency to allow qualification for defending champions as there is a scenario where the 'champions' of Europe are only the champions of Europe and not of the country they originate

This should have ben covered at the begining as this is not the first time this happends. Last time was when Real Madrid won the CL but became 5th in la liga.

It's disgraceful that a team who has lost 13 games this season and finished 5th is able to get to the Champions League final. The champions league is for the European elite and Liverpool have proven they are far from that this season. A fluke run in a cup isn't a measure of a team.

so? do you think that greece shouldnt be allowed in euro 2008? so what if its luck? its still a LOt of luck to ask for. and maybe they came so low in the league because of trying so hard in europe? look at boro, when the uefa cup was heatin up they lost all their prem games but when it was over they picked up again .

Going far in the CL and in the league isnt easy, Milan just came into the finals. Couple years ago Real Madrid came 5th in La Liga but won the CL. The Spanish FA granted them the place for the CL.

Common sense dictates that teams who lose 13 games over the course of a season and finish 5th in the league should be nowhere near the competition never mind the final.

So you're saying a team should be able to rest themselves during league games in order to be successful in european competitions and be rewarded for it. That makes a mockery of league football.

nope because if they make that sacrifice they forefit the league title and probably a few fans also it's not as though teams like liverpool can replace quality for quality.

How is it relevant that they are sacrificing the league title? Liverpool never had a realistic chance of the title anyway. They had a chance of european football. If you aren't good enough to sustain a run in the Champions League alongside a decent domestic performance you shouldn't be in the Champions League.

Why not explain why Liverpool should be allowed into the Champions League instead of your pointless flames?

Because the FA before decied that if Arsenal or if Manchester United would fall outside the top 4 would still qualify to the CL if they actually won the Champions League.

Liverpool only have themselves to blame if this scenario becomes a reality,
they knew the rules but chose to rest players in the weekend league games before their champions League fixtures.
Mi initial thoughts were the champions should have the right to defend their trophy,
but on thinking about it further I now hope UEFA don't grant Liverpool a place if they win the trophy to preserve the integrity of domestic football.
Think about it, Crystal Palace were 8 minutes from staying up, if they had of done it would've been due in no small part to the 3 points they picked up against a weak Liverpool team,
now for example if Man Utd had fieled a weak team in the final day fixture against Southampton in preparation for the FA Cup final they would've been justifiably slaughtered, yet Liverpool get away with it against another relegation candidate just a few weeks earlier.

Ok here's an interesting article....
http://www.football365.com/teams/tottenham_hotspur/story_152838.shtml
do you think teams that play fair (least amount of yellow cards etc.) in the league should be entered as wild cards into the UEFA cup? I think that champions should always be allowed to defend because it adds a bit of anticipation / expectancy.
