Tomorrow Canada decides if it wants to spend 4.6 billion dollars on social spending or on corporate profit tax cuts.

I have a feeling that I'm going to be really pissed off tomorrow .... you dudes are going to hear about it Neutral

Well, Bush isn't president of Canada yet. It could go either way.

I wish it was that clear cut ... the fact is that the amendment to the budget (ie the reallocation of the 4.6 billion$) is based on a liberal/NDP deal, and is more probable to fall through. I guess we'll see ...

Time and a Conservative government. At least the current Liberal goverment proved that we aren't the USA's lap dog, refusing to go to war in Iraq (we have some soldiers in Afghanistan) and refusing to join in building a missile shield.

I want Harper to die. He is the worst kind of scum. Neutral I back the NDP 100%.

Conservatives will cut social spending, privatize as many public institutions as they can, increase corporate tax cuts, cut the taxes to the wealthy, marginalize poor/immigrants/women, make the lives of lower and middle classes more difficult, and will do whatever Bush and his GOP henchmen want them to do.

Vote on the amendment is scheduled for 6pm ... we'll see what happens ...

I think some kind of liberal/NDP coalition would be great. It would represent the majority of Canadians, and each could keep the other in line (ie NDP keeps the Liberals honest and truly left wing, Liberals make sure that finances and spending stay in order).

I was sure that this was going to be the outcome of the last election, but sadly it was a few seats short.

So unless you live in Jack Layton's riding, your vote (like mine) didn't count.

I'll sleep a little better tonight. As of about 2 minutes ago we decided for 4.6 billion in social spending over 4.6 billion in corporate tax cuts by a vote of 153-152 . This also means that the current government will stay in power, and the conservatives can go fuck off and die slowly and painfully.

oh, the money will be spent on this:

Quote:
Broadly, the agreement in principle invests $4.6 billion over the next two fiscal years in the following areas (each split equally over each of the two years):

- $1.6 billion for affordable housing construction, with a dedicated fund for Aboriginal housing construction to improve the appalling living conditions many Aboriginal people face. This money is not contingent upon provincial matching funds, since this requirement has been proven to fail in the delivery of affordable housing construction.

- $1.5 billion to reduce the costs of post-secondary education for students and their families via an agreement with provinces and territories; and better training for workers through the E.I. system. Again, this crucial investment in our economy is not contingent upon matching funds.

- $900 million for environmental initiatives such as an energy retrofit program that helps homeowners reduce energy bills and pollution through efficiency; and a one-cent increase in the gas tax transfer to municipalities for public transit, recognizing our cities’ central role in building a strong economy.

- $500 million in foreign aid, which in the first year puts Canada on a path to honour our long-broken promise to the world.

- $100 million for the protection of workers' earnings in the event of bankruptcies.

I'd say that the NDP did a good job of getting this amendment with only 5% of the seats. Smile
