It's all very interesting, their database with all of their promo keys has been leaked. So now with it comes a bag of mixed activations, some legal and some not.
How can they tell the difference? They could check the unique ID's that were redeemed and deem them legal but that's far from fool proof since some people instead of activating the keys on steam, activated the unique ID's on the promo site and got the cdkey sent to their email.
How about requesting people to send in proof of purchase, like a receipt? Well that's gonna take a lot of man power to validate... Who's gonna do that? Steam? AMD?
As far as I see it they can either take the loss or disable all the Dirt3 promo keys. Which one is gonna be? Time will tell
Doubt there will be ban waves over this, the PR shit storm will be huge!

It occurs to me they could ban hammer "fucking everyone" who activated dirt 3 promo key in the past 72-96 hours, since the leak occurred. Then wait for legit people to send in a support ticket to steam with proof of purchase.
But that's too extreme I think... Also lame as in "guilty until proven innocent" lame...

Based on valve's response in the past to these types of things (metro and a few others, they didn't ban anyone or remove games,) I doubt that registering a key will result in an account closure or removal of game. tl;dr: unlikely to the extreme.
With that in mind, I took no chances. No risk is acceptable to me in this case.

Yeah you can still play it, they are not going to remove it from your account but you can't use those keys anymore, it says invalid key.

This comes from Codemasters, just this hot second: "You may have heard this weekend, activation keys for free Dirt 3 game vouchers shipping with a few AMD products were compromised. The keys were hosted on a third-party fulfillment agency website, AMD4u.com, and were not on AMD's website. Neither AMD nor Codemasters servers were involved.
We're working closely with everyone to address the situation. AMD will honor all valid game vouchers, but just a heads up, the current situation may result in a short delay before the vouchers can be redeemed."
