In an interview with gamespot, the general manager of DICE, when asked about what's the biggest problem in PC games industry he said..... Cheaters? WTF, where's the piracy bandwagon? Cevat is disapoint! Laughing
What would you say is the biggest threat to PC gaming?

Karl-Magnus Troedsson, general manager, DICE: In light of recent events, not just gaming but everything, hacking is one of our biggest problems. I think every company out there is arming themselves to the teeth when it comes to security. It's natural for a company to gain its credibility and take care of a person's credit card. The problem is that if [hacking] keeps increasing, then this will perhaps take focus away from making the best games and services possible. That's definitely a threat, one way or another.

I understand where people come from with this whole anarchy; everything should be free kind of situation. I think a lot of us who work in the game industry were hackers from the beginning. Some people hacked code and they managed to get into the games industry. There's definitely some kind of connectivity between the subcultures or whatever you want to call it, but the problem here is that we want to focus on making the best games we can. Let me give you an example. We're working on Battlefield. We're spending a lot of our time just fixing problems that have to do with hacking our game, people creating cheats, or people running the game for others because they have aim bots…all the kind of crazy stuff people can come up with when they reverse engineer a game.

Battlefield requires some planning and a more tactical approach/team-play...COD fanbois have the "shoot first, ask questions later" mentality (also the fact that maps are bigger than 10x10m apparently makes them disorient Laughing).

So hes giving out about people that used to do what he and others did even though some of them will go on to work in the games industry because of the reverse engineering and modding they are doing now. But then the guys hacking now will prbably be saying the same in 10 years time.

Would it would not make far more sense to accommodate those guys and nurture a new generation of game designers.

Another thing ive been wondering about lately is this rising cost in development especially on consoles. If their hardware remains static and they gain experience with that hardware with each game why do they need more and more money to produce a game, every other industry the cost is generally driven down over time.
Or is it like a civil service type of situation where there are more and more managers hired that just add costs without adding anything constructive
PC is different as the hardware changes constantly but its still hard to see how the cost of developing game x 2011 should cost any more that developing game x 2006

I don't much care for bashing COD players but another thing that is usually mentioned is that you have to run for maybe a minute sometimes just to get killed straight away. Oh noes! I can understand this point if I would have an attention disorder but I just love the change of pace.

I hope BF3 will knock down my #1 favorite team player game of all time, RTCW, from its throne but I doubt it. Can't wait to get to play the beta.

It took me awhile to get into BC2 for this very reason. It's not fun spending 30 seconds+ hustling along to get taken out by a sniper from God-only-knows-where. I got into it eventually, but it does mean the learning curve starts high and then plateaus. Which is another way of saying I get where the CoD players are coming from, and that the two games differ quite a lot in a few ways. Just because people prefer one over the other doesn't make it better or worse.
