GTX260 should be your minimum. They've gotten extremely cheap as well.

Forget stores. You're not going to find one of these "ancient" (Laughing) cards in any reputable store. Stick with Fleabay or private vendors .. as these have long since been made EOL.

Why don't you save up some money till Kepler comes around sometime in the first half of the next year? The only serious PhysX title on the horizon for now is Batman Arkham: City, and by serious, I mean flying papers bringing heat and exhaustion to your hardware.

Nah i REFUSE to get an nvidia card as main GPU.

I had over the past 5(?) years nothing but problems with them.

Im sticking to ATI Razz

GTS 250. Ignore the name, it's just a G92 (8800 GT, GTS-512, 9800). Can easily find those sub-50 Smile

I don't know how the GT430/440 stack up against them, but G92 isn't that hard to find at orunder 50.

i know you just want something to tool with, but its sad how many fell for the physx hype and bought a nvidia card just for that.

Does the hybrid ATI/Nvidia physx thing still work?

Do you need a specific nvidia driver?

It's a stupid solution anyway. buy a single nvidia gpu as main gpu and physx or don't bother.
Really not worth running another card for dedicated physx alone.

My single GTX 580 ran pretty much same fps PhysX enabled than with dedicated 275GTX i had lying around. No worth getting dedicated card.

Tho you are using ati, so i would recommend getting something like GTX 260.

To be fair, physX did make quite a difference in Alice Madness Returns

A dedicated 8800GT will handle all your physX needs

Sure, it made Alice look quite different. Was PhysX necessary for any of it? Fuck no. I wish they'd use PhysX for, well, physics rather than simulating aesthetic bullshit that can be done without it.

I had physx running on my GTS 450 while playing AMR. I got a fair bit of stuttering when turning the physx up high, I had to settle for medium. The only problem I could think of was that my board runs x8 x8 x8 with three cards, but I also read that a GTX 580 only just goes over x8 bandwidth.

I think they use it only for small gimmicks because a dev wouldn't want to implement cool sexy physics which took two years of development just so half of the userbase can see it (a very raw guesstimate). Unless this "exclusive physix for brand X" shit ends, I doubt we'll see any meaningfull development in that area.

Is physx not locked out if you also use an ATI card?

Thats true its not necessary and its a gimmick and all that stuff. BUT it was the only option for us gamers to get those effects whether you hate physx or not

No, you're misunderstanding me TC.

I'm not saying it's all gimmicks. I'm saying it's gimmicks that don't need fucking PhysX. They've all been done before without it, often even better, but every time you see this PhysX label you know some pretty standard shit is going to be disabled unless you have NVIDIA.

Especially the particles are a disgusting element; not only are they taken away completely without PhysX, with PhysX they're overdone, which in most games looks ridiculous (Mafia 2 for example). Then there's things like in Batman: AA, like the smoke which doesn't interact with the player and as such wouldn't need GPU acceleration. Same game, the retarded stacks of paper. I love the game, played through it twice now and once with PhysX - but I was not impressed *at all*.
The fluids in Alice? Don't make me laugh, there's less simulation involved in that than there is in Portal 2 ffs.

My point is that the shit PhysX is used for can all be done without PhysX just fine at the same performance hit - because it does still cost performance. If it meant you could do this without losing any performance then it would have SOME justification, but you can't.

Nobody is building a game around PhysX since it's proprietary to nVidia. They don't want to lock out 40% of the market. So they're left with some gimmickry and prettifying stuff that doesn't really matter.

What we need is an open standard physics engine that runs on all DX10+ cards. Bullet is coming along but OpenCL is still immature and we wont' see proper use until OpenCL hits 2.0. In the end I don't think there will be one big physics engine that everybody is using, it will simply be OpenCL-based custom solutions in games that work on all architectures. PhysX will continue to stay in the niche. It HAS sold tons of cards for nVidia though which was the ONLY reason nVidia bought PhysX to begin with.
