Alright,

I won't pretend like I know anything about this... but here it goes...

So for a few years I have been using a monitor (21.5 inch I believe) with a max resolution of 1680x1050. Now I understood this to be a 16:10 monitor (I'm not sure what decides that, monitor size?), and I ran all my games @ 1680x1050 so they looked sharp and crisp. Anything below that wouldn't look at nice.

Yesterday I picked up a new monitor, a 21.5 inch LG LED with a max resolution of 1920x1080. The screen size seems to be the same as my last... or so I think... 21.5 inches, I compared them next to each other and they seem the same...

So now I'm a little confused.

What decides whether a monitor is 16:9 or 16:10, and will 1680x1050 look the same on my new monitor as it did on the last one? Or will I have to start using different resolutions/aspect ratios for it to look the nicest.

1680:1050 = 16:10 (or 8:5)
1920:1080 = 16:9

These are the ratios defining the quotient between the length and width of the monitor.

I see...

well, so does this mean I can still run a 1680x1050 resolution on a 16:9 monitor?

Of course, you can. Smile Anything below 1920x1080 is perfectly achievable.

It won't look the same though. Any TFT monitor looks shit at anything else than its native resolution, so for the best image quality you still want to use 1080p Smile
