But the whole point of the show is that humanity failed and is at the end of it's short existence, thus time travel being the chance is to try again, in a different direction instead of the failure that ultimately led to the end of humanity.

Too much family and teen bullshit is ruining this. If that was just done with, I think it would be a lot more enjoyable. So just kill the kids, get a bar into the village and let the dad start having a drinking problem = TV show saved!
