It was very underrated. The game is very unique, especially in it's art style both visually/sound wise. I loved the world, the setting and the story. And I think the gameplay has some interesting mechanics to it, not to mention the boss fights or the text story sequences.
In a world where CoDs and BFs get 9-10 out of 10, and people complain about originality, this game was very underrated.

SP games are forgotten fast Sad

True. This had DLC didn't it? Anything story related?

Yup, you can always leave it to the Nipponese to create brutally difficult games.

Only in the beginning, when you don't have alot of Bezels so you must be careful or you can die quickly. After about 1/3 of the game it's normal difficulty with a slightly more challenging bosses

I disagree. A lot of the later fights (three Giants, anyone?) are insanely difficult.

Kill the poisonous giant quickly and you won. Poison is nasty in this game

well KrutojPoc is probably just so awesome that RoF was a cakewalk for him.

For ordinary humans though it was really tough in more than a few spots...
I definitely had my fair share of game overs there!

On the subject of Nier though, I played the 360 release when it came out and had a lot of fun but only completed it once... this week I bought it for PS3 so I'm gonna jump back in really soon and go for several playthroughs this time to get the big picture.
It's a really great game.. can't wait to experience it again.

I actually feel really bad.. I was looking forward to this game for ages, acquired it when it came out, played for about half and hour and never went back. And I don't know why! Bah. I'm going to have to start playing again =) Incidentally, which version do you guys recommend? 360 or PS3?

It was. Like i said, after about 1/3 of the game it wasn't hard anymore. The reason why "ordinary humans" had troubles is because they never understood the game's rules completely. The tutorial was too damn long and complicated for most people so they just rushed through it and started shooting things mindlessly. You can't expect the game to be easy if you don't know how to play it Wink

I'd say both -- there are 2 versions: Gestalt and Replicant. I'd say play the x360 version - Gestalt - you already have and get Replicant for the PS3 f you can. Or play them both on the PS3 if you choose so. As far as I'm aware there are no major differences in the Gestalt version.

Quote:
Nier Replicant is being developed exclusively for PS3, and looks somewhat different from its Gestalt counterpart. Both games feature a white-haired protagonist named Nier, but Replicant's lead is a younger, slimmer and a bit more effeminate than the 360's lead character. Both stories have our hero(es) on a journey to save a family member: in Replicant, it's a sister, while in Gestalt, it's a daughter.

Fixed! Fishing is pretty relaxing to me. Farming is just frustrating.

Also there's Gestalt and Replicant for the PS3 but Rep is in japanese only no subs. As I cannot speak the moon runes, Gestalt is my only option.

Anyways I've played quite a list of games and IMO while not "the best game EVAR" this game is really good.

Gameplay mechanics are simple yet interesting with the boss fights and depth even with the basic controls and interesting abilities.

Crafting and collecting items is great. Just the right amount of pacing and just the right amount of difficulty for bosses. AI actually flanks you instead of rushing, they constantly try to undermine you whatever way they can, which can and does include ganging up on you.

Graphics....they do the job of looking bleak but they leave much to be desired. If it was at a higher res with AA and higher res textures it'd be great.

Sound isn't phenomenal but the tracks do a great job of evoking the right emotions.

Story is dystopian and a little anime at times, but it's good. I enjoy the story greatly

Bummer, so it seems I was wrong. I heard Replicant was Japan only, but wasn't sure - it was a bit confusing as some people state that it's not, though I admit I haven't done much research into it since I don't own a PS3.
Seems Sabin will have to go with the Gestalt one. Maybe he'll enjoy it so much that he'll learn japanese to play Replicant. After all, it would be a shame to let that PS3 region free goodness go to waste. Very Happy

For me the sound is the best thing about this game. I found it amazingly good! Followed by the story, character, world and boss fights.

IMO having beaten Xenoblade I find it hard to top that sound track, but listening to it now seperately the Nier soundtrack is very good.

I'm not saying it's bad!

I know, I wasn't implying that. Just stating my opinion about what made this game great, for me. Razz
As for Xenoblade's OST, I haven't played it so I can't say anything about that. Will give search for the OST though, now that you mentioned it.

The OST has tons more weight if you've played the game, but I suppose that's the same with every game. You relate certain tracks to the emotional impact they had in the game.

Had an impulse to burn this game last week even though it got shitty to mediocre ratings.

Boy are those 'journalists' wrong, this game is fucking amazing and i guess i doesn't tend to their pewpewpepeepw needs.

Yeah sure the world is a bit bland and the fetch quests are boring. The story and characters are all interesting and i'm glad this game doesn't end happily after every boss battle Smile

Also the most engaging soundtrack in a game i have heard in a while, simply amazing.

I still need to beat it 3 more times with newgame + for the extra story and endings Razz
