It's probably due to that auto-configuration feature. I bet you can force higher res textures via console. And they probably set a very low threshold cause of all that 60fps hurr durr.
well this has to be an error of some kind... on the other side, i wasnt overly impressed with Doom3 when it came out back in the day, they masked alot of the shortcomings with darkness and extreme bumpmapping back then.
Masked or not Doom 3 is a supperior game vissualy, especialy with mods.Atmosphere matched only by Stalker
Spoiler:
Well see how doom 4 turns out,but so far tech 5 seems like a downgrade for console .

One video on YT showing extreme pop-up (why couldn't it be a user fuck-up?) means Ati dropped the ball? Or are there more complaints from other users?
Both wrong, ATI didn't drop the ball. id just didn't work with them or NVIDIA at all during development. NVIDIA whipped out a quick beta driver to partially fix id's fuckup, but AMD never does that so the RAGE driver only has some minor fixes, not the major workaround for what id need yet. Shouldn't take long, but the blame is on id here.
So yes, on AMD you're most likely fucked right now, but no they didn't drop the ball.
you know what they say...nvidia the way it meant to be

Thats my guess too, but how weird of ID Tech, in my books a PC centric dev (until now), to include no way to change the gfx settings. Not even optional.

nvidia had a profile in their drivers for something like 6 months. And they updated it regularly with a new exe name etc, so no id worked with them.

No, there is no space for better textures. There are no better textures included, you can't expect better ones to materialize out of thin air and display on your screen.

But is this the way it's meant to be played? (Nvidia lol) or is this a bug?

Mega Textures is really incredible looking when its using hi-res textures:
but kind of meaningless since there's no way to ship a game that is hundreds of GB's big though.
is the game any fun? from the videos it looks like their usual linear, corridor design, but instead of being restricted by walls, there's cliffs or other stuff blocking you from exploring?

My ass did they. Having a profile means fuck all; they are often just what you described, some generic fixes because it's an OpenGL game along with updated .exe names. I can't confirm it for NVIDIA, but AMD haven't had the info nor access they needed until a couple of weeks ago or so. Considering NVIDIA cards are still having plenty of issues (flickering, older cards still get a lot of pop-in even though they should be able to handle this with ease), if NVIDIA did in fact get more access earlier then the joke is on them for not getting it done in time. I doubt it though, the game has too many issues on both sides for that.

Signature/Avatar nuking: none (can be changed in your profile)
