Another setting I've been toying with caused stuttering after some more testing, it only works if set trough the console though or by "exec rageconfig.cfg" a second time so I didn't notice this until now.
It was the jobs_numthreads value, set it to 0 and move forward, streaming will cause a FPS hit, set it to 1 and move forward and it'll improve, at a value of 2 there should be no framerate hit depending on CPU model however at a value of 3 and higher the framerate hit and stuttering will get quite bad.
EDIT: com_synctotime seems to be able to alter the 60 FPS limitation from what I've read, unsure if there's any drawbacks.
EDIT: Solved it, cvaradd com_synctotime -1
(cvaradd is required, maybe I can now override some certain locked commands?)
EDIT: 150+ FPS, game runs three times faster though, also cvaradd can indeed override all locked commands.
EDIT: Only works on some values after further testing, also adds the value added, does not set a specific value.

I just played for nearly an hour. This feels definitely like an ID Software game. I got the Quake 4 vibe from it several times. The shooting is satisfying and brutal. Gameplay seems a bit simplistic so far but it's nice to have an inventory and supposedly a way to craft items/weapons? The game is kinda linear but that was to be expected from ID.
The game looks beautiful in several ways but you can't help noticing that it is still a few levels below modern game graphics, which saddens me a bit. ID seems to have decided to stay in the past technology-wise (some sort of gaming dinosaurs). The abounding low quality textures is a screw up and a let down. But it won't keep me from playing it.

Six hours for a modern grapically fine shooter, yeah that is something to look forward to I think...this game looks fine, plays great and is fun and lasts a lot longer doing everything in the game.
<sarcasm mode on>Yes we really need some fps top notch grahic games lol. Fun for one evening but at least it looked good...gameplay sucks...</sarcasm mode off>

Just install and play, use the 11.9(.3) drivers or the latest atiogl.dll file if you already use the 11.10 preview drivers.
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=351811
(Post 19 for the separate .dll file, just add to the game folder, not the windows folder or anything like that.)

If you forced VSync in RadeonPro, don't. Use CCC for that, forcing Vsync on in RadenPro cause major pausing issues in Rage for me.

Running on a 4870 i did eventually manage to get rid of the black textures and achieve a semi-playable experience at around 25fps.
Have the id software/rage files created in users/AppData/Local
Use this as your rageConfig
Spoiler: | seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "8192"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "8192"
seta image_preload "1"
seta image_useCache "1" |
Completely uninstally drivers, and do a fresh install of 11.9
(Uninstall drivers, restart computer, reinstall 11.9, restart, try rage. This is important as it was the last this i tried before getting a playable exprience.)
In CCC disable Catalyst A.I and force V-sync
Perhaps some of these steps arn't needed, perhaps it won't solve the issue for others, either way, it worked for me so it's worth a try if you're out of ideas
Edit: i wasn't impressed at all with the game itself, had expected much better. Can only hope Skyrim won't turn out the same.

Finally download is done, and I'm using a config from one user on hardforum below(see spoiler).
Spoiler: | Make a file called rageconfig.cfg in ...\Rage\base, paste this inside. It will autoload.
vt_qualityhdplossless 1
vt_qualityhdppower 0
vt_qualityhdpspecular 0
vt_qualityhdpnormal 0
vt_qualityhdpdiffuse 0
vt_qualitydctpower 100
vt_qualitydctspecular 100
vt_qualitydctnormal 100
vt_qualitydctchroma 100
vt_qualitydctluma 100
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 8192
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 8192
vt_pageimagesizeunique 8192
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 8192
vt_minlod -1
vt_uncompressedvmtr 1
vt_uncompressedphysicalimages 1
vt_vmtrcompression none
vt_maxaniso 16
ik_enablesmoothing 0
image_lodbias -1
image_anisotropy 16
image_usecompression 0
image_screenshotquality 100
I suggest these as launch options;
+com_AllowConsole 1 +com_SkipIntroVideo 1 +cvaradd g_fov 10 +mem_phymemblocksizem 1024 +fc_maxcachememoryMB 256 +jobs_numthreads 4 +vt_maxppf 128 +vt_maxlockedpages 64 +m_smooth 0 +r_swapInterval 1
Everything runs great with a 6970, no tearing or popup textures anymore, using the latest amd driver.
You may want to go make these 2 folders which it likes to use for a cache file, but fails to create on it's own;
C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Local\id Software\Rage |
I don't have the texture popping problem, but the graphic is so bad that I can't believe my eyes that ID actually making this shit for a few years time? Tbh DE:HR is much more better than this shit, I can't image how bad it is if I use default quality setting instead of so called high quality fix(8192).

Don't know if this has been posted before but here it goes:
The ATI hotfix for Rage didn't solve my texture issue completely and it conflicted with logitech's gaming software. I have a G13 but i guess driving wheels and G15 keyboards use the same software.
I'll give this game a go in a few weeks/months. A shame, since shooting really feels right!

When running the game I got awesome performance, but when entering the first mission, I got "Your system doesn't meet the requirements for blablabla" NVidia OpenGL error code 6. Also loading screens took ~30-60secs. After a bit of poking, changing the following lines:
Quote: | vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 4096
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 4096
vt_pageimagesizeunique 4096
vt_pageimagesizevmtr 4096 |
Got the game running, and loading screens were ~5sec long.
I have no clue why, latest official driver, 32bit Q6600, GF460GTX 1GB, 4GB DDR2. I suspect somehow I ran out of VRAM?

im playing it on a 460gtx 1gb card with the 8192 texture settings and 4x aa no problems, the game is only using around 800mb of memory for me.
im using msi afterburner so i can see the memory usage onscreen as i play

StrEagle the config I use currently is pretty rough albeit it hasn't changed much other than the removal of the above threading "tweak" and some light adjustments.
I'm currently going trough the settings one by one and then together with other settings so it's a bit slow but I'm starting to understand how it works.
Spoiler: |

seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly 4096
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique 4096
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr 4096
These can be removed since 4096 is default, tried 8192 but it will glitch and stutter after a while but it can be driver related or a engine problem too.
(Half values like 1.5 x 4096 which was 6144 didn't work well either.)
Anisotropy tweaks needs more testing also, I've seen no problems with using higher values but apparently it can cause texture "lines" as some sort of minor glitch.
seta mem_phymemblocksizem 512
seta fc_maxcachememoryMB 256
Lowered these further from 2048 x 1024 initially, or at least it should have been but fc_maxcachememorymb does not change since it's a locked value which is unfortunate.
seta vt_maxppf 256
seta vt_maxlockedpages 128
Lowered from 1024 x 512 as well and just doubled instead, need to check if it's actually true that the defaults of 128 x 64 actually is max but so far it seems it can go higher, or lower to improve performance on older CPU's at the cost of longer streaming times.
seta m_smooth 0
Mouse smoothing, can be removed as well since it currently can't be changed / is locked but I've kept it around.
seta vt_usecudatranscode 0
Set to 1 or 2 if you have a NV GPU to enable it again, saw no need to keep it enabled myself since I use ATI but otherwise it should best be left on.
(2 tries to force it to handle more texture data, might need a decent GPU and a fair CPU to work efficiently whereas at 1 it tries to help intelligently with slower streams or how it's actually set up to work.)
Quality settings also need some work as the highest-quality values might be a bit unstable, LOD and LODBias do help so I've kept them but -0.5 might be better but I need to test this further and I've found no more info on compression but since it needs a full game restart I've not worked much with it.
(Vid_Restart actually but that command only works partially.)

AI is cool, just played this so havent gotten far but the first mission was so fun to just watch the enemies jumping from cover to cover in a kinda half-cinematic way. Its got some nice features too bad the rest of the game feels so simplified and shallow.

I like the animations they've implemented as well, shooting different areas having them recoil or collapse, shame only the head can be "gibbed" (Other than using explosives and getting a red cloud effect, ha ha.) it's set up very well if maybe a bit scripted but it looks fantastic.
(And the AI isn't that bad even though they're fairly weak other than in larger numbers.)
