Just saw this on GameFront. lolwut

Quote:
We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version.

Look, not to defend the guy or idea or anything, but have you actually thought about him just saying, what he genuinely thinks is true? He's not only a technical director, he's also a businessman in the industry, and as such has access to data, that we don't have access to.

Do you really think a company like id wouldn't like to push the boundaries once more? I think they quite fancied that position in the past, maybe Carmack genuinely had a change of heart.

I'd say he is in fact acting exactly like a second Cliff Retardo Bleszinskzizszksikikii.

Make shitty a port to PC, defend it by saying how dead the PC is. Sounds very familiar.

The irony of it all is, consoletardos don't even know what id is. Wonder how they'll build a loyal fanbase there...

The PC is NOT the leading platform for games. It's plain truth. Consoles own the title of being the leading platform for developers. Nothing in that says anything about capabilities or long-time PC fans, it just states that there are more console owners out there buying more games than PC gamers do, and that's why the PC isn't the leading platform.

And let's not kid ourselves, it's not 1996. Publishers and developers are doing it to make money. There are no more ideals or developers being PC gamers themselves, most of them (who still play games in his/her spare time) probably play games on their Xbox 360 or PS3, not PC.

Actually, I think most of Valve, and definitely 99% of CDP Red are PC gamers.

Valve? As someone who doesn't enjoy or care about multiplayer games (L4D & TF2) they haven't done anything of worth since Half Life 2. Since then it's been all about steam and some updated MP games.

As for CDP Red, I'd say The Witcher 2 proves they've gone multiplatform to make money just like the rest. It's a business.

Probably, maybe, perhaps. Doesn't work like that.

The only reason he is saying it is because of how lazy of a port Rage is. If they had actually bothered with Rage and it ran perfectly for everyone he could say whatever the fuck he want, but as it is he's just making excuses.

Episodes, Portal, Portal 2 are 4 universally acclaimed SP games, you can't deny that.
L4D1 is a brand new MP game, and TF2 is a pretty different game than TF1, you can't say it's just "updated".

I'll agree with you only about DoD:S, CS:S and L4D2.

Going multiplatform ≠ being console players.

Probably 75-80% of sales in Poland are from PC games, and knowing how CDP are Polish, believe me, a huge, huge part of the team is probably PC-only gamers.

Conclusion: Carmack and his team having a hardtime delivering what they promised to PC platform, so they come up with pathetic excuses.

Wow I didn't expect someone like Carmack saying something like that. I always saw Carmack as someone who was above the corporate bullshit. I thought Carmack was in the industry for the love of making awesome engines and awesome technology. He can't be though because anyone who really loved making awesome tech would hate developing for a console (stone age in tech terms) when he could be doing state of the art stuff (PC).

I guess Carmack officially has become a has-been then. He's in his comfort-zone where he knows everything he needs to know and doesn't want to learn new stuff. The console is perfect for people like that because there isn't anythnig new to learn. New shit happens on the PC all the time. Goodbye mr Carmack. You still have a legendary name in the industry of course but enjoy your pension age.

didnt he just say, developing rage for console was a mistake (instead of developing for pc and then port to console, instead of console to pc porting) ?

He prefers the PC platform, but he is right, PC can't be called leading platform when console games outsells PC. It's sad but true.

PC: Yes. Console: No.

edit: He was so pumped up and excited on the QC2011 vid, talking about texture streaming issues and lack of hd space of consoles....then came the release and the "evil" pc gamers pissed him off (FOR a reason though). He went even more herp derp and replied.
