this preview3 driver actually fixed my 4xxx problems , no artifacts and i don't have to force v-sync or triple buffering or turn off A.I and i even don't have to use the mutlithread 0 command anymore and performance is a lot better
highly recommended for 4xxx cards

Oh fuck me. Played for almost an hour and then died. I didn't remember to save my progress manually and the "checkpoint" threw me to the beginning of the mission I was doing. Remember. To. Save. God damn it.

So I finally finished this. Considering this was one of the most anticipated titles for many (excluding myself and a handful others ). Ahead you will find some praise, some hate and some delicious rant. For most of you I'm just stating the obvious, but I have a reason for posting this (see the final spoiler at the end).
Let's start with the good bits. First and foremost, at its core it still is an id shooter: shit hits where you aim, movement is responsive, mouse input is direct (stupid sensitivity if you have your mouse set to a high DPI like I have, but at least there's no bloody acceleration). Besides that, the variety in ammo is actually really fun; especially the crossbow and wingsticks are awesome fun - I wish there was more freedom in constructing it (letting you try and find combinations), but having 3 types of ammo per gun is already nice to have. Animations and level design are brilliant as well for the most part and there are times were the game really does look gorgeous.
Right, the bad bits then. There is absolutely no AI of any kind, whatsoever - I can't express how badly this annoys me. The "AI" consists of "execute animation" -> "aim at player" -> repeat. It is in no way reactive to what you do at all. This has been touched many times already, but graphically it literally goes from a 10/10 to 1/10 in a heartbeat. Many of the textures which SHOULD have had a lot of detail simply don't have it. Another point that has been raised many times are the invisible walls. I don't mind invisible walls, but at least place them properly and not in places where you could fucking crawl onto the platform where you want to go, or above railings that are 20cm high. The biggest failure is in the actual game itself. The vehicle bits are boring and weak and the story only really starts by the time you get to the end.
All the console influences I can live with, because there are PC backups for most of it. Ammo switching should have been better though, instead of the limited console-oriented crap there is now.
Time for some ranting. The ending is one of the worst fucking endings I have ever seen. Everything about it screams DLC/sequel/WEWANTMONEIZ and what I said is true: the game starts when it ends. The lack of an AI makes it extremely easy as well; on the hardest difficulty nothing changes besides the bad guys having triple the HP, so you just need twice as many shots. Not a big deal if you're like me and tend to go straight for the head, just pop off two shots instead of one and they still drop. Next bit of ranting into a spoiler for those who haven't finished it yet.
Spoiler: | They give you a "BFG" (needs to be green and more destructive to be called BFG id, fuck you  ) right at the end. Now in any shooter -especially id's own fucking shooters- something like that suggests something huge is about to give you some surprise buttsecks with a powerdrill. No, in RAGE that means you get the same fucking piece of shit soldiers you've been fighting half the game, combined with..*drumroll*..more fucking weak ass mutants. The illusion of freedom is also fucking annoying, it would've been so much better if it didn't have that, because there's nothing open about it at all.
Most annoying of all are the missions. The main storyline gets you to each "instance", which is followed by an NPC and/or job board "quest" for that same fucking instance. Moreover, the second time you go back you do the exact same thing in reverse, with the third time having one extra door which was previously blocked by rubble or some other shit available; and your main path blocked by rubble mysteriously.
Seriously, why did it take them 6 fucking years to come up with a game that recycles every level 3 times to give it some substance, on an engine which is 6 years old as well - and still have bugs in addition to that? Because the engine, despite what Carmack says and some people believe (looking at you, consolitis  ), this is not a rewritten engine. Everything about it is Tech 4: it looks just as plastic as D3/Q4, has the EXACT same movement quirks and benefits as Q4, and just feels exactly like Q4. Not saying that's a bad thing, although it's a well known fact that I'm not a fan of Tech 4 - with all the patches it got, it became a fairly decent engine. All we have here is the stuff used in ET:QW and all the patches for that/Q4 all rolled into a new package. Not a new fucking engine. |
So is this game complete garbage then? No, it isn't. Is it worth the hype? No, it isn't. Is it worth its full price tag? No, for the SP, it isn't (I won't comment on the MP, haven't played that, nor will I).
What is it then? A massive wasted opportunity. A game with massive amounts of potential. But it is not a great game. It is amusing, good at points, but far from great.
I did not experience any technical issues other than RadeonPro making the game crash and before the first patch my sound was strangely broken; only thing that fixed it was running BF3 before I ran RAGE. I'll be damned if I know how the fuck that works, but it just proves my point once again: this game was not tested properly on the PC. It ran without a hitch for me, capped at 60 FPS with no strange glitches or anything - but from what I've seen on here and other forums, NVIDIA and AMD definitely did not get access to this game, that's more bullshit from id. If they did get access, things would not have been this bad on both sides of the fence.
Spoiler: | For those skipping to this: why did I feel the need to post this? Because I fucking got it right. Everything I said beforehand has come true. It is a console oriented game running on a patched-up Tech 4. It is not a true PC game and the only thing that saved it for us is the fact that it still is Tech 4. Had they actually done what Carmack claims, which is rewriting the engine, I highly doubt it would've felt so good in the shooting department.
id have forgotten where the fuck they come from and this game hasn't put them back up there with the best developers in the world. For that the game should've been tested properly, show some improvement on their 6 year old tech, and not be a 4-hour game artificially made longer by reusing the same fucking shit three times in a row. And that is aside from the lack of story and AI. |

Impressive rant, sir, impressive indeed. What's more, it's not just impressive but also accurate too. As much as I enjoyed the game (and I really did, start to abrupt-finish) I also happen to agree with every single downside you mentioned. The game had some seriously schizophrenic design decisions, stuff that makes absolutely no sense when you consider the company and the talent it came from.
Like I said on Skype, this game can be summed up with two words; wasted potential.

Awesome post, Werelds! I'm pretty sure I won't be playing this anymore now. From what you said, it sounds like a completely broken game for me. Doesn't matter though, I wasn't hyped for it and I had some fun tweaking it.

It's not broken, it's just a wasted opportunity. Just for the record, I still am on my 6950 in fact and I had 0 (graphical) issues. It's still a fun shooter, but I was already bored by the time I got to leave Wellspring and absolutely fuckall happens after that.

i thought rage was ok but i also expected what id has come out with lately, tech demos. they are really unable to make good SP games. i loved and played all of their titles, spent years on quake 1, 2 and 3... but after that, meh. quake wars = tech demo of mega textures and some other shizz. doom = tech demo of lighting effects. rage = console tech demo.
i'm just hoping there will be a fallout 4 with id tech 5, might be something worth while \o/

Good post Werelds, sums it up nicely. I agree with the points made, though I do not see the potential. The engine makes sense and sounds cool on paper, not in practice. Many design decisions are from an ancient time (especially the AI).
I too hoped Bethesda would use IDtech5, but after seeing this and what their own engine is capable of, I hope they stay away from it.
