World of Darkness Online

  • Official site: None yet
  • Publisher: Crowd Control Productions
  • Developer: Crowd Control Productions
  • Genre: MMORPG
  • Release date: 2012? (unconfirmed)
  • official announcement:
    Quote:

A merger between Crowd Control Productions and White Wolf, Inc. was announced at the annual Eve Online fanfest in Reykjavík, Iceland, in November 2006. As part of the deal, it was announced that White Wolf would be adapting the Eve Online intellectual property into a RPG, and CCP explicitly stated "There will be a World of Darkness Online", referring to a MMORPG version of the game. According to the latest news, work has already begun on the WoD MMORPG and full time production is to commence within the year and launch in 4-5 years.

Full production of the WoD MMORPG will start March 2009 after the Eve Online expansion is finished according to CCP.

After the announcement, both White Wolf and CCP have been very tight-lipped about the project, but since it is finally due to move from pre-production to full production, we should know a lot more in a relatively short time. Latest tidbit of info is from January 2009, where the 2010 launch date was mentioned (see below).

Report: World of Darkness MMO Launching in 2010

  • Story/Description:

    Quote:
It is unknown at this time what the setting of the game will be, exactly, since The World of Darkness (or WoD) comprises of three related but distinct fictional universes (see here for more information).

For reference, the two earlier game adaptations (Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines) both used the now-defunct Vampire: The Masquerade setting, which has since been replaced by Vampire: Requiem.

  • System requirements: Unknown
  • Screenshots & Trailers: None at the moment, but here's a placeholder:

To me, personally, this is one of the more exciting upcoming MMO's. I've never played the PnP games, but loved the first two Vampire games (as a sidenote, the unofficial patch for Bloodlines just got updated to 6.0, definitely worth getting at http://www.patches-scrolls.de/vampire_bloodlines.php) and I can't think of any dev that could be better for this than CCP. Done right it could really be a revolutionary game within its genre.

They sure hit the nail with EVE. How they'll fare with a bit more conventional MMO remains to be seen. Looking forward to it.

Looking forward to this. If it's anything like EVE with the automatic skill training you are gonna want to get into it early, being years behind everyone else sucks.

I suppose I could revive this thread a little bit, perhaps try to get a discussion going.

- Game Geeks #39 Monte Cook's World of Darkness by White Wolf ( Watch this and reflect on how much of an awesome MMO this could be, discuss! )

http://www.wodnews.net/Home/tabid/41/ctl/ArticleView/mid/401/articleId/69/New-WoD-MMO-info-from-The-Grand-Masquerade.aspx

Quote:
Donovan and I were at the 2p MMO conference here at TGM. CCP Producer Chris and others were present and we got lots of new info. Before I start let me preface, the game is still in pre-production, they were very clear NOTHING is set in stone, as things stated today may still change. But as of now the facts listed below are the current stances of the direction of the game.

Eddy Webb mentioned in the Q&A before the MMO panel 'EVE is player vs player fucking each other. That is the kind of games CCP makes' - Very interesting and telling IMO.

  • The producers stated their philosophy in making this MMO was "human interaction". They feel that is limited in the current crop of MMO's and their biggest weakness.
  • They are trying to emulate the feel of LARPing more then EVE or any other game system with this MMO
  • There will be a general CCP run metaplot that develops over time but the main metaplots will be left for the players to drive forward.
  • Next year is when more specific info and details will come out
  • Incarna is actually considered a prototype, the rendering engine that will ship with the MMO will be much more advanced.
  • Everyone starts as a mortal, becoming kindred in optional and can not be forced on you. You can play he entire game as a mortal only.
  • There will be final death for both mortals and kindred.
  • PvP will be more limited in some ways, yet more open in others then any other current MMO.
  • There will be cities (plural) and communication between them (the various kindred and clans) will be encouraged/possible.
  • Caitiff will NOT be in on release. They discussed it internally and couldn't find a way to make them work in a way they liked.
  • Casual players will find the game accessible but hard core players will have a much deeper experience and more rewards/benefits.
  • Considering some kind of web site access interface for the MMO
  • NO day/night cycle, only night.
  • Humanity is a stat is game and one use is to address griefers. The more you cause issues for other players, break the masq, etc the more you can loose humanity and once it gets too low other players (and NPCs?) can attack you (implied even if you flag yourself non-pvp).
  • Griefers will suffer both in game and if serious enough out of game penalties (ie account banning)
  • Helps to make friends and not enemies in game as you can not get to the top of the food chain without networking and having friends to assist you.
  • Players will have havens.
  • Players can climb the ladder and get to Prince levels of power and run a city
  • Can get to Prince level power without killing a single thing, all done via networking, politics and friendships
  • ONLY kindred on release of game, no were's, mages, etc. However those other supernaturals may be used in a NPC fashion or/and their lore appear in game.
  • MMO character sheet very similar to the V:tM PnP character sheet.
  • Character names over the avatars head by default turned off, but can turn them on.
  • Game world/environment will change over time; real in game consequences for player actions.
  • Diablerie and related game mechanics from the PnP game is "under heavy discussion" no decision as of now.
  • Dynamic NPC missions/World events
  • One world server, no shards/instancing.
  • Torpor in game but not used as in PnP game, used as a mechanic to explain why a kindred did not die/final death
  • They are aware the WoD is is a adult setting and the devs are going to not shy away from gore, blood and nudity. However such will have a reason and not adult content for the sake of adult content.

We have video of the panel that Donovan took. Going to try to get that online soon, also after to go though the notes may follow up with more tidbits this post missed but I am pretty sure this is the core of what was said. We also have the Succubus club event tonight that has been hinted even more MMO info will be released so we will see tonight!

They're sure taking their sweet time about it.

CCP Cuts Staff By 20%, Refocuses On EVE Universe

Guess that means the WoD MMO is dead (or even worse, turned into some hideous F2P facebook crap) for now.

I applaud the focus on EVE. If they have troubles managing that game (which they apparently do), it's way better to sort things out there before pouring more money into a project that might not survive if their only other game isn't generating enough money.

I have a feeling that all the recent money-grabbing schemes they tried to pull in EVE were all aimed at financing WoDO instead of just being greedy (they managed to stay sensible with their playerbase up to fairly recently).

So I guess if you want to see World of Darkness Online released, you better go and play EVE. Very Happy

I'm on it. Just resubbed for a month until I can start playing on PLEX again. Very Happy

Ofc WoD online isn't dead, just postponed until they sort their financial situation again. They obviously need the revenue from EVE (they have nothing else) so focusing on stabilizing the player base is a smart move.

Pretty amazing stuff.

EvE fucked ME several times with her surprisingly powerful spreadsheet effect. Every single time I thought I was about to have the tiniest bit of fun, she hit me again with a row of hardcore numbers!

A comment in the WoD layoff news article over at RPS mentioned that EVE players got hold of CCP's financial records (is it a public company?) and determined from the rate they were burning money that they would be in serious financial trouble (i.e. unable to pay staff) by mid-2012 without alternative revenue streams, so something like this was inevitable. If their console game flops, expect them to axe another healthy portion (and possibly shitcan WoD altogether).

That's the proper response from Twilight-fangirls, WoD-players and Justin Bieber-fans. However it is blatant and pure projection. You're the ones ending up blowing Peter's peter, and glittering in the darkness. Cool Face

Project is still alive and kicking:

Interview: (devs are strongly inspired by Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines which sound good IMO; I personally loved the atmosphere of that game)

And really nice clothes and hair physics demonstration (done with nVidia's APEX technology). (because I'm graphics and technology whore )

Glad to see them hard at work, but after the half assed way they debuted the "walking in stations" part of Eve, I'm kinda sceptical about the graphical fidelity they try to convey with those character cloth physics videos. I have no doubts about gameplay, just won't expect the kind of detail they showed in Eve.
