I am multibooting Redhat Linux, Windows 98 SE, and Windows XP Pro on my PC. I have an Intel D850GB motherboard. Recently I maxed out the RAM on my motherboard to 2GB. Now all operating systems work fine except for Windows 98 SE. While booting Windows 98 SE, I get a message

"Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and restart your computer."

then the computer hangs and turns off. I have followed the instructions on Microsoft's KB articles:

but it did not work. I played with the "MaxPhysPage" and the "MaxFileCache" field in System.INI and got to point where I got to the Desktop but the resolution was low and I was getting all sorts of error messages.

Did anyone else encounter this problem. Can someone give suggestions to resolving this issue. Thank you.

I'm sorry but running Windows ME/98 on systems with more than 768 MB is like playing the lottery. Be adviced that all the solutions MS discribes in their KB articles have to be performed before you put in the memory above 512MB. But like MS said in their KB artivle:

Reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 MB or less.


There is no guarentee that it will work. And let me guess you are using a AGP card? Thats why you get the low resolution:

Vcache is limited internally to a maximum cache size of 800 MB.

This problem may occur more readily with Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) video adapters because the AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in the system arena. For example, if Vcache is using a maximum cache size of 800 MB and an AGP video adapter has a 128-MB aperture mapped, there is very little address space remaining for the other system code and data that must occupy this range of virtual addresses.


Try to reduce the AGP aperture size to under 128MB.

Another solution would be VM Ware. You could easily set the amount of memory to 512MB and install Windows 98 there. Or do you need some special interfaces on your system?

Can you please tell me how to reduce the AGP aperture size to under 128MB? Also I do not want to reinstall Windows 98 at this point. I am multibooting with Windows XP and Redaht Linux. I am afraid that if I do reinstall Winodws 98 , I may not be able to boot into the other OSs.

1. You can change the AGP aperture size in your bios, look under video options or something like that. Though it is possible that 128MB is the minimum size you can choose, depending on the board.

2 You said you have 2 GB RDRAM, So you have 4x 512 MB RAM, there is now way you get below the 768MB mark i guess, wich would be essential for a reinstall. Sometimes it helped that i put the ram out to get below the 768MB and change the settings described in the KB article and then install the ram back in. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not, so good luck Smile

Mmm.. if you don't want to install windows 98 again, then surely the problem is solved Wink!

FYI: If you do happen to reinstall windows 98 your bootloader will be overwritten, this is reversable though, if you plan on reinstalling I would suggest creating boot disks for both your XP OS and your *nix OS. You can quite easily re-install Grub (the bootloader your no doubt using) with this command at command line:

grub-install *

*make sure you put the drive you want to install grub onto in place of this *. Should you want to edit the boot menu it can be found: /etc/grub.conf on most systems. Just for good measure, here is grubs manual: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/index.html

From what I am aware none of us guys support Win98, lemme know if you continue to have issues though, Ill have some words internally.
