Yeah it's becoming quite popular it seems, Skyrim for example switched over from LIVE to Steam.

Unsure about Arkham City though, wasn't it via Steam but still utilizing Live?
(Still they could easily use that SIM/SID function regardless, just that with Steamworks it's nearly always utilized and it's often the only way it's distributed so there's no way for the game to leak or be cracked earlier than the key is released, for digital titles like Serious Sam 3 even if the key has been available for weeks now it can't leak until they release it since there's no way to acquire the files.)

There are other methods of course also such as SecuROM (Battlefield 3) and LIVE / ZDP or Tages but I think Steam is the most secure since every single file is encrypted.
(Still without the exe - such as SecuROM or ZDP - not much can be done either.)

EDIT: Steam is improving though, newest beta improves support functionality and RAM usage and CPU has gone down a bit (11 MB when idle currently, not bad though Windows likely have a bit more cached via Prefetch or how it was again, I'm no expert on that sort of thing, ha ha.)

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2192326

Has it's downsides though such as requiring net connection (Not that much of a issue by now however but still.) and now and then there's some occasional bug or server connection issue, offline mode can also be a bit unreliable but often it works OK.
(No use in mentioning prices as most stores do this but there are often cheaper alternatives available so it's usually not required to purchase via Steam.)

EDIT: Ah right also the release date restrictions, still VPN seems to work well with that and should be safe (Don't try to bypass store regional prices though.) but can be a bit clunky to set up. Razz
(Yeah I know there are contracts and business deals but when the game is out and released it should be playable if it's available, which isn't a issue with digital distribution but apparently annoys retail distributors so Valve is playing it safe, might be other regulations as well since other D2D stores usually do this also, what do I know.)

Rockstar really needs to take a leaf out of the SR book and reinject a bit of life into GTA. They don't have to go down the same completely bat shit insane route, but they need to ease off on the whole gritty grimdark reality thing.

Why? No need for GTA to go back there now that we have Saint's Row.

Sorry DCB, I'm with Dezztroy on this. Keep the silly/fun stuff with Saint's Row.. and keep the grimdark realism with GTA. Two separate game franchises, two separate directions. Me likey!

GTA IV's DLCs did a great job though, they managed to keep the original atmosphere intact while enhancing the craziness factor Smile

I never played the first SR, but the second wasn't as crazy as everyone made it out to be. Kinda felt like San Andreas. All the activities were stuff you usually do in GTA games when you had enough of the missions, just here they put names on them and they give you respect for completing them. So i didn't really find it that crazy.

But i'm waiting for this one since it looks like they will fix my complaint Razz

Yes, because San Andreas definitely had you driving a sewage truck around expensive neighbourhoods, spraying excrement all over buildings in order to devalue the area. It also most certainly had you starring as a corrupt cop, killing and brutalising law breakers in order to show up the SWPD. I especially loved throwing myself in front of vehicles in order to run insurance scams. I LOVED that in San Andreas!

Very Happy

And, of course, let's not forget the amazing way you can don a fire-retardant suit, set yourself on fire, then drive a quad bike through crowded neighbourhoods. Epic stuff from Rockstar there! Loved it!

there was plenty of inanity and craziness in the optional stuff and secrets, but you could also ignore stuff like zombie carlos or the sewage truck and play it like a less serious, over-the-top san andreas with more customization and better story (and no fucking early midpoint where you are reset to zero for sake of story convenience that made no sense whatsoever). kinda hoping 3 is like that too.

GTA is "grimdark realism"? In what alternate reality is GTA realistic? Do people not remember flying around with a jetpack in San Andreas?

Compared to Saint's Row, GTA series are über realistic.

I never said GTA was realistic, I was responding to someone ELSE who did.
