The broken PS3 is 3.15, weeeeeeeeeeee!
@Werelds: where did you buy the thing? Not a Dutch site? The cheapest I can find is 55 for the laser alone and 60 for the whole package.

http://www.consolepro.nl/sony-bluray-drive-loopwerk-lens-kem400aaa-nieuw-voor-ps3-p-856.html
They've gone up in price though
Just make sure you got the correct one though. Check on this site which one you have: http://www.edepot.com/playstation3.html#PS3_Blu-ray_Drive
The newer ones are a bit cheaper unfortunately, but you can still get both brand new and refurbished parts for both (refurb on consolepro is 10 EUR cheaper). Tell us your model number and Sabin and I can tell you exactly what you can or can't do, he has taught me well and I've been reading shitloads of stuff about it
Damn you for getting one with a proper firmware though, my mate thought he had 3.41 but it had 3.60 on it (3.73 now)

I haven't gotten around to fiddling with the console yet, I'll do that in the weekend. I was looking at releases for games, most popular titles seem to require FW above 3.55. RDR for example seems to require 3.66 (ABSTRAKT). Is there any way to circumvent this? If no, WTF is the use of the release since the highest CFW is 3.55? I've also read GAIA and MM stopped supporting discless boot with the new versions. Does this mean I'm fucked?

Naw, that's the new GOTY version. The original RDR and the standalone expansion Undead are <3.55 titles. So get those, not the GOTY. However, there are plenty of titles now that require 3.6 and above -- the same goes for game updates/patches -- and sadly there's nothing much you can do about that atm. TrueBlue is going to allow 3.6+ titles to run on 3.55, but that's only the games themselves -- not updates.
As for MM not supporting diskless? That's not true.

PS2 = no go. Forget it, put it out of your head for now. Unless you buy a Cobra dongle, there's nothing you can do to play PS2 backups -- and don't hold your breath for someone to crack it either. The dongle has been out for MONTHS and nobody cares. If it's not 3.6 PS3 games, the "scene" doesn't give a rat's ass. Shame. You can play in-region originals if your PS3 is actually a backwards compatible model (CECHA through to CECHG. Nothing above) but no backups without Cobra.
What version MM to get? Mega. It comes with a fuckton of covers for games - and should also come with the MM-compatible emulator packs. If not, just grab Full and the individual emulators.

Yes, but not very well I'm afraid. Terrible compatibility, terrible performance, terrible visuals. The pure software emulator is really rather poor. Heck, even the half HW/SW emulator on the PAL models is pretty poor too.

PCSX2 does the job for that anyway for me, so I don't really mind not being able to play PSX and PS2 games, although it would've been nice to do it "natively" - shame even Sony were too lazy to implement that properly

i have just tested another one of my discs ,copied to internal with multiman and that works perfectly.
so i would say that my ps3 seems to be ok as that is two originals i have tried copying to the internal that work fine
however i only have tintin duplex to test at the moment and i have ftp'd that to the correct location "GAMES" folder and do not have any extra paths in the file name/paths
it will not showup in the list like the games i have ripped myself
not sure if there is something obvious i am missing or it is down to the game, doesn't seem to be a tintin thread on here so can't see if anyone else had such problems...
not sure on how you apply these duplex games, i persumed it was a matter of ftp the folder structure to the GAMES folder on the hdd 0 on the ps3 and then force a refresh on multiman and it shows up
sadly this one doesn't
suppose i should try a small PSN game to see if that works

Ok, well first off... I can save you a lot more trouble: Tintin? It's a 3.70+ game. You can't play it. At all. You *cannot* play games that require more than 3.55 at the moment, sorry. I'd have said something earlier, but like I said; I haven't got, nor do I want, Tintin. So I wasn't sure which FW it requires.
PSN games (ie, from DUPLEX) are PKGs. Just stick them on the root of your USB device and install via "Install Package Files" - they will then appear on the XMB for you to play.

This, sadly. As I said to Werelds earlier;
Quote: |
[16:15:13] Sabin: it's a nice exploit, but useless to non-developers... and guess who already knows about this? That's right, the developers/hackers.
[16:15:54] Sabin: you think the very people this was leaked FROM are going to use it and help the scene? Heh. These people dont' give a fuck about anyone who isn't a coder.
|
I have my doubts anything tangible will come of this, unless - as Werelds pointed out - it's from a newblood who isn't tainted by the "hide all progress!" stuff currently poisoning the scene.
