Even with Epsilon reassuring that this feels more like New Vegas (which I loved), gameplay videos didn't impress me at all. The animations are dreadful (no excuse if this is a new engine), and graphics are just your typical medieval fantasy game.
I don't remember a game that impressed me as much as the dwarven town in The Witcher 2. Meanwhile in Skyrim there are just "nameless" villages.
Again, I'm not flaming. It's just that Bethesda games are aimed for a casual crowd, hence it's even more dumbed down than Oblivion.
Would you guys still be hyped about this game if Bethesda wasn't so open to modding? |
|
What I like and have always liked about the TES series (since DaggerFall), is the ability for the user to not follow a set path and the stories that are included when doing so. I don't expect Skyrims graphics to be heads and tails beyond Oblivion, but it is based on a redone engine and from what I've seen it looks pretty good. The graphics you've seen have probably been from the xbox version, which I've seen first hand (it was released about ~6 days ago?) and it's not the greatest although after about an hour you get lost in the game and the graphics become "standard" at that point (just like any game). The graphics are indeed set in a medieval period (or continent) and it does work well with the story, as it's something we're used to and is indeed a period in which we generally place dragons. The story may sound cliche (a knight killing dragons), but there are other things going on like the political strife currently engrossing Skyrim.
I've played the Witcher 2 (2 run throughs) and I thought it was a great game and the graphics were fantastic (maxed). From what I've seen already, I don't expect the pc version to be better, but I know the pc version will be better than the console versions. They include higher definition textures as well as the ability to modify draw distance, AA, etc..
Another RPG I thought was fantastic was Gothic II. The graphics weren't by any means glorious, but the story, npc characters, and fairly open world was really fun experiencing. I got lost in the adventures you could undertake and the drama of the world in general.
Again, the main draw for me is that we do get a new Bethesda story and a classic open world where we will be free to do whatever we want (inside the parameters of the game of course). This was a draw when I initally played Morrowind (and then DaggerFall, followed by Oblivion). For me, having this open world, dynamic quests, multiple guilds to join, a world to explore that is not locking me in a set path or area is what makes Skyrim a better game. I have not played a lot of the xbox version (maybe about 2 hours) and I will not play anymore as I want to experience the rest at my house, on my pc. One thing I"m excited in is to see how the Dunmer and Argonians treat eachother and if there are any rogue factions in each race's camps. There's an absolute goldmine of history in the TES series and the stories are what make them worth playing.
I think modding will greatly stretch out Skyrims playability, but I don't think it's something that's required. As we've seen from console sales, it's certainly not a factor there, but obviously us PC folk are better than that lol. As in Morrowind and Oblivion, I expect to see a lot of mods to tweak the interface, quests, houses, new weapons/armor, and maybe after a year or two a completely redone Skyrim (I'm forgetting the name of the Oblivion one). I'll be dabbling in the modding, but by no means will it make or break Skyrim for me.
I wasn't aware there were "nameless' villages, would you be able to provide a source ?

@sm00nie
See, old nfohumpers? THAT is how you do a debate. It's nice that it's coming from a new user too.
I agree with most of your points, and I wasn't really comparing TW2 and Skyrim. I also appreciate games that let me do what they want, and I had some fun in Oblivion killing bears and stuff. The open world factor is what makes TES games.
The thing is, it just become monotonous after a while, at least for me. For instance, the fact that you could be a guild master in all of the guilds in Oblivion was laughable, and it really turned me off when it came to being one with my in-game character.
I wasn't talking about graphics in Skyrim per se too, I just think that the art direction is your typical medieval fantasy, nihil novi sub solem kind of thing.
And about the nameless villages, I put "nameless" in quotes for a reason, it's just that (from what I've seen in gameplay videos) most of the villages look the same and serve only the purpose of a minor sidequest, you don't "get used" to them because you're just passing them by.
Excellent post sm00nie

It showed up on BlackCats for a second, with a VERY legit looking NFO too, but was deleted a short while after. It's obviously bogus because the NFO said;
Unpack
Mount with Daemon Tools Pro
Play!
LOLNO. It's a Steamworks title. There ain't no "mount and play!" involved.

Aye, I expect more fake Skyrim "releases" in the next few days than any other game this year (except perhaps if Diablo 3 is due)

I only need one that is working. I prefer SKIDROW since they tend to release updates for some major AAA titles.

The thing is, it just become monotonous after a while, at least for me. For instance, the fact that you could be a guild master in all of the guilds in Oblivion was laughable, and it really turned me off when it came to being one with my in-game character. | I can't recall which thread I saw this in (bethesda skyrim general forums), but they apparently put a check in place that would not allow you to be the guildmaster of every guild. For example, the Mage guild might not want you to be the guild master of the Assassins guild, and a conflict would occur. I just spent the last 10 mintues trying to find it, but there are too many damn posts over there :/. I can't confirm this to be 100% true, but it seems logical that this something that would be addressed. One thing I think would certainly help that (not a fix mind you) would be to only join x and y guilds the first run through and then a and b guilds the second. I know it's extremely tough to say no, but that would definitely play a role in those "master of all" scenarios, and be more in line with a rping a character.
Neon wrote: | I wasn't talking about graphics in Skyrim per se too, I just think that the art direction is your typical medieval fantasy, nihil novi sub solem kind of thing. | Oh, I completely agree. I think one of the things that'll help offset that environment will be the types of enemies you'll come across like the Draugr or liches (really reminds me of Warcraft). Its kind of a juxtaposition of two elements that will make things a little bit more interesting, than the standard medieval fare. Neon wrote: | And about the nameless villages, I put "nameless" in quotes for a reason, it's just that (from what I've seen in gameplay videos) most of the villages look the same and serve only the purpose of a minor sidequest, you don't "get used" to them because you're just passing them by. | I believe that's because in certain territories all villages belonging to a specific faction will look a like. The best game example I can give would be to compare it to Civilization. The Romans had a specific building type, as did the Chinese, or Babylonians. Riften looks different than the city of Solitude or Whiterun. But they all have things in common. I'd love to see an updated Telvanni style city, that would blow my mind lol
