whats a good one to get?

looking for one for my mother for xmas, it doesnt need to be fancy or anything... no ipads thanks...

also looking for something that'll work with a decent range of pdfs and other formats, and i can just load shit up straight onto them from the pc without needing to do any roundabout converting or transferring via third party apps or anything...

suggestions? or anything i should know about ebook readers? i know nothing about them.

It depends what you want it for.

I bought a cheap Chinese android tablet (Flytouch 3) and use that for ebook's and it works really well, but I only use it for reading at night in bed, so not in sunlight etc... I also have the added bonus of web browsing and what not.

If you need it for reading in sunlight, then I would just grab a kindle.

It depends on if you really need to read a lot PDF documents. Most readers are not that good to read PDF files on, just because of the limited screen size and lack of decent controls.
For PDF documents, I really would suggest a tablet or an Ipad.

If it is mostly ebooks, then get the Kindle or (if it can be a tad more expensive) the Sony PRS-T1.

Also about converting: Will it be legit ebooks, or mostly pirated? Kindle doesn't support epub natively, so you have to convert it. But it is simple as hell. Most other readers support epub ba default, so no converting to be done there.
If you only gonna use legit ebooks, this one is unimportant however.

it'll be primarily for reading books - so txt and pdf files - some of those pdf's will be straight up text, and some could potentially be images (ive seen books in pdf form as images instead of txt) - would that be a big problem?

it would primarily be for pirated books, not bought ones if that matters.

With a friend who sells them..he loves the Nook.. Apparently the new versions are very easy to Root and it has all kinds of features that do things... you can apparently also ready books on them.
