Yes, absolutely... BUT! There's no reason to not take both, they're not mutually exclusive. It's far, far easier to level smithing though as enchanting requires soul gems which are expensive and rare.

OK thanks but for me it will have to be either one since my build won't allow me to take both.

I was going for Enchanting since i've heard that it was quite powerful (and even overpowered according to some ppl) but i'll take a look at the Smithing tree on the wiki and weight the pros and cons of each and then take a decision.

So how does one get unique weapons? I didn't see any mention of crafting schematics etc. I like smithing in this game particulary because I think it's very well done and fun, but it's a bit redundant if you can't create some rare items.

So any musthave mods you guys can recommend already?

How important/useful is smithing later on?

IMO the entire smithing branch is very important, not only for drastically improving your armour, but also constructing newer pieces without having to find them in loot. Oh and dragon-bone armour Very Happy

Would you take Smithing over Enchanting ?

Smithing is better than enchanting.

You can upgrade and improve your weapons which is kinda cool.

Impressive!
So, I presume you already got all 15 Daedric Artifacts?!
Are they the same as in Morrowind and Oblivion?
I have seen on the pics Mehrunes Razor, the daedric dagger.
Are all the other Daedric weapons there, too? "Goldbrand" and so on?

I got only one artefact myself until now, the light armor Saviours Hide, which is not bad, but looks so shitty (the "same" problem as in Morrowind and Oblivion, by the way). For the mask of Clivecus Vile you are going to lose the dog, arent you? But I want to keep the dog Wink The mask is shitty, too, if it has the same statistics like in Morrowind/Oblivion

Dont you think that the companions are far too powerful - on default (medium) difficulty ?? If you take the girl and the talking dog with you, you do not even need to fight yourself. They clear the road and the dungeons, especially if you fit the girl with good equipment, that you can only grab the items left by fallen enemies. Even if they can die theoratically (unlike in Fallout 3) you have to have very bad luck to see this happen Wink

I agree, they are to powerful.

If you have the dog + a companion + (horse) you don't even need to fight many battles yourself.

Its not that they do very much dmg, but they can take WAY to much dmg, at least the one i used.
 Spoiler:

It was bit to easy to just let my companions take the dmg and for me to attack from the side with my uber 2-handed attack.

I think it would be better to make the NPCs weaker in hp and not able to die. Add some penalty when they die, like you need to see a doc or something and pay 500 gold to get them back or whatever.

Also i would like to remove the attack of my mount.

Well i just took a look at the wiki and i would save 7 perks if i invest in Smithing (no need to invest in the heavy armors smithing perks since i'm going all light armor) over Enchanting. I'd also won;t have to mess with soul gem so that's another plus.

So yeah i'm going to replace enchanting with smithing Smile

He's probably dead.

I spent an hour trying to find my dear sweet precious Lydia but apparently my calling down the lightning killed her and it was all for naught. So now I'm stuck with Sven. Good old useless Sven. Ugh.

Especially since there are NO penalties for a mage wearing armor (or are there?). You can wear light or heavy armor and have complete spellcasting abilities.

So, is there ANY reason to use mage robes with no armor value at all?
With Enchanting you can remove the "xxx % faster mana regeneration" ability and put it on a ring or another manually enchanted armor...

lol that's just IMBA! ;D

Armour should have a neg affect for mages imo.

Maybe Light -25% magica-regen and heavy -50%, something like that.

Why should armor have a penalty for mages? Mages already have to spread their perks out over 4 or so trees if they want the most out of their "weaponry". If they want to use armor as well, that's just another skill to invest in (two if you also want to enchant it, which you'll have to do if you want it to be useful mage-wise), which is already enough of a "penalty".

Why should a mage wear only robes?
I use a robe, a hood, and elven boots and gauntlets. What's stopping you from enchanting elven armor with -destr cost + mana regem?

One question about smithing :

Does the Dragon Armor perk include both the light version (Dragonscale) and heavy version (Dragonplate) or jute the heavy one ? Because if it's only heavy i won't bother with it since i'm going all light armor.

Alright thanks but i have another question Razz

Do the Ebonyflash , Ironflesh ect spells from the Alteration work/stack on top of light armor or do i need to wear mage stuff/being naked for them to work ?

The reason i ask is because is because the Mage Armor perk description state that Stoneflesh , Ironflash ect spells only get a boost from that perk if not wearing any armor. I may switch Alteration for Archery if that's the case.

Heh, as a dual wielding, heavy armor wearing barbarian I am doing pretty well on expert difficulty... Unnamed dragons don't take more than 6 seconds to go down, even without a companion. Stamina was a bit of an issue but I got lucky and found a dragon priest mask that gives a ton of armor and stamina (took a lot of potions to get that early in the game, I had no idea what I had stumbled on). Now I have the heavy armor perk that makes it weigh nothing so I can zoom around pretty fast (lvl 31, so yes I've paid a lot of money to Farkas for heavy armor training).

I do regret not going with Smithing (I did enchanting), but such is life.

Here is a tip for smiths (contains minor spoiler):

Weeeeee!! I finally stopped ignoring Block and put some perks into it... now at least I can drain 50% elemental damage, so those frost mages aren't TOO impossible. Still aggravating fuckers, just a little bit more manageable now. Still looking for a paralyse spell though Laughing

took me till level 19 to realise that the "misc" line in quest journal holds all the little sidequests i took (or gotten) and i can actually click them and find out where to go (this includes where your homes are lol).

btw, i am really enjoying this lol. I try to not to nitpick and simply let myself immerse in the game, going along as i see fit, not trying to complete everything or whatever, just going along as i would.

HOWEVER i did give me some gold and bought the houses and fournished them. I dont spend any time in them lol, but i cant be arsed to GRIND money in a singleplayer game (especially for something so trivial and vanity as the houses hehe).

Oh and 2h Orc juggernaut ^^.
