So a friend wanted to build a new PC, and I helped him pick out all the parts since he's been out of the whole PC loop for a while.

i5 2500k
EVGA GTX570 SOC
G.Skill 8Gb
Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3P motherboard
120Gb Force 3

Now when it's all assembled, he gets this artifact

Is it the 570? Not sure.. and also, I don't live close to him so I can't troubleshoot it myself directly..

I would RMA the video card right away, while it's still under the warranty

Alright, now I have some more clarification - it boots a few seconds to that screen, THEN that strip shows up and it freezes. With another graphics card, same deal, but the strip shows up at the bottom instead. Tried removing one stick of RAM, same deal.. So, motherboard then?

Watercooled 5950X | AORUS Master X570 | Asus RTX 3090 TUF Gaming OC | 64Gb RAM | 1Tb 970 Evo Plus + 2Tb 660p | etc etc

Alrighty then..

And Werelds, my favorite PC-tech, any thoughts/input?

Edit: Also, when he tried another graphics card, he used the built-in one on the mobo.. Still, it's not the 570 then.

If it happens with both the discrete and integrated GPU, then it's definitely not the 570. These things are hard to figure out though, in this case it SEEMS to be the motherboard but it might as well be the PSU not providing enough juice. So which PSU is in that thing? It could also be the CPU not initialising properly, but that's unlikely; I've very rarely had CPUs fail on me and with the last few generations there are so many protections built in that you have to try really, really hard to get it to blow up. RAM doesn't cause artifacts like this on its own, so you can pretty much rule that out.

Most likely the board, but it never hurts just to check. Unfortunately the quality of Intel's last few generations aren't matched by most motherboards that go with them, lots of DOA's (myself included, I had to RMA my P55-GD65 when I first got it) Neutral

Indeed, if it happened with both the dGPU and iGPU i'd say the motherboard is DOA.

This being said - Why did you choose for him a motherboard without a true UEFI bios? It's such a huge improvement, and Gigabytes 'touch bios' isn't UEFI.

Well I was going to chose another motherboard but it was out of stock and wasn't supposed to come back in stock for atleast another week or so, and he wanted to order ASAP. So I chose another mobo and did not think about the "touch BIOS" etc..

Oh well, I'm sure he'll still live with that BIOS though, it's not the end of the world.

If you haven't tried it allready - Remove the cmos battery and all power from the board and let it sit without power for 24 hours. This has 'fixed' a motherboard for me on two occasions. Both times were brand new builds.

Ah yes, I've also "fixed" my PC by removing the battery, good tip.

One more thing to check is the grounding. What case is it in and what kind of standoffs does it have? Might be leakage through there as well (sounds weird, but trust me, it's possible Very Happy).

Besides keeping it unpowered for 24 hours, i'd remove the board from the case and once you go to turn the system back on just run it off a cardboard box to remove any grounding issues.

There SiN, ton of suggestions for you, get to work Very Happy

Seriously though, Mchart's suggestion is the best one. Eliminate as many factors as possible, plug in only the bare minimum to see if it passes the BIOS.

Well, good news - after removing all the cables/things connected to the motherboard and reconnecting it all, it's now up and running with seemlingly no issues! Let's hope it stays that way too, and that it was just a loose cable or connector or whatever Smile

Thanks fellas for the support, this is why I always come here first when I want some answers regarding PCs Smile
