Well the game was kind-of unprotected before, could launch TESV.exe directly without Steam even being present.
However by this method to enforce Steam to start the game (Well Steam_appid.txt still allows starting the exe directly but does still require Steam.) it also brings the various protection methods such as not being able to alter the exe, at all.
(LAA is a one byte switch, 00 to 01 basically if I understood it properly.)
EDIT: I don't quite like it though (I rely on LAA in order to help stability with some of the more demanding tweaks I use.) but I guess they have some reason for doing this now instead of say adding a patch note on the ~28th (patch 1.2 release day.) with something like greater Steam integration or security update in there and justifying it as such though it would probably be seen trough fairly easily just like what happened now.
(LAA patching is useful but can also cause bugs depending on OS, x86 or x64 and RAM availability so that's one possibility or they might have changed their stance on it and thus added copy-protection back again, no idea what they've decided on.)

Well the game, same as most(all?) 32bit apps, can only natively address 2GB of memory - this causes massive issues when you're modding the shit out of the game as it simply runs out of usable memory. The 4GB (Large Address Aware) patch basically tells TESV.exe it can use more than 2GB. For the most part; you won't notice it unless really pumping up the visuals, though even natively you should notice smoother streaming and less thrashing as you load new cells.

Best quote from that thread
"So they managed to release a patch to fix the solution to the crashes"
I cant see how they did this to discourage piracy since their customers are now scouring torrent sites for the old exe
This is a weird world at times

eh, you could be right, but i'm calling it, there probably won't be mod support for this title.
and if there is, it'll probably be immediately after a few thousand pages/threads of rage in reaction to the idea that there won't be.

Why is no one saying officially why the protected .exe all of the sudden? I hate it when the devs are fucking quiet about stuff.

bethesda is just making sure they can reverse their stance on it in case of nerdrage, they do that a lot, test the water before a big change and be ready to do a 180.

They didn't complain how hard it is to develop for PC back in the day when consoles weren't this popular and didn't bring a shit ton of easy cash. Fucking assholes.

As would be expected, no problems here on 32-bit Win XP (duh!).
