systems boots fast (i dont give a shit about it), programs/games start and load fast (i dont give a shit about it, i have 2 monitors + one movie usually on the second one.). for me, no reason to purchase one.
MUCH faster. If don't care about boot up times and program start up times then don't get one, but for me it was the best PC purchase I made in the last few years. And I have the old version that is twice as slow as the new ones. Back when I didn't have one my HDD was most definitely the bottleneck for many of my Windows operations.
Yes they are because hard drive read speed is not the bottleneck for games. Data needs to get uncompressed, processed and loaded for use of the game. And that is the bottleneck. So no matter how fast you hard drive reads the data it will still get loaded at pretty much the same speed.
I love my ssd´s (have 3). Its not only the loading times, but the access time also... no more read/write-head crawling over the disc, searching for fragments of data (and no more noise ).
Those that bitch and degrade ssd's, prolly never had one before (or one really crappy).
Get a second gen SSD and try shit for yourself, ONLY THEN you can say if they are still not worth the €1,- per GB (wich 7200RPM was a couple of years back, still everybody bought them, AND YES YOU TOO).

So you are saying that an i7-2600k would be the bottleneck and not a 550mb/s read speed?
Doubt that i7-2600k would not be capable of "uncompressing, processing and loading into ram" faster then 550mb/s?
Make some sense.

try to download daily 20+ gigs of torents without preallocate file on (and move completed torrents to another drive), and see what fragmentation is .
first i do that.. second why wouldnt you preallocate, and why would you move? i have 2 separate hdds for torrents, and i never use them for gaming
just half of this month i have nearly 2tb uploaded, and nearly 400gb downloaded
as for "impossible to defrag with big files " do you even know how fragmentation works? i wont pretend to be supper smart here or anything or say that i know exactly how it works, i got basic understanding , and if you got 20gb~ files on hdd.. yet trying to defrag that hdd without at least 50gb free space or similar, ofcs its impossible those files wont be moved, as there isnt enough space to do so, more free space you have on hdd the faster and better defragmentation process will be
and i dare you to show me any test, where fragmentation below 30% have any real impact.. my main partition got 2% fragmentation, and its always about that
Ofc you can defrag a drive even with big files, tho if there is no space to move shit around, it just skips it.
If it has effect to defrag a HDD with low space and big files, thats a second thing. But impossible, not true.

Yeah mostly the CPU will be the bottleneck. Not saying that SSD wont have ANY impact, but whatever impact it has it's minor and mostly in extreme situations, mainly when the drive is already at pressure from somewhere else, or just bad programming.
Most streaming engines today have one thread for reading data from disk (or mapping it to virtual memory directly), and multiple threads for resolving that data. Multiple threads are needed so they can be ran across multiple cores, which is further proof that resolving (decompressing and processing) is the bottleneck.
So how much mb/s of data stream can a cpu like mine handle on a single thread according to you?
Funny how you say that the CPU will be a bottleneck, especially when only about ~30% usage is on my cores with most games. But somehow it's a bottleneck.
Yea, that is logic.

Sausje I have no idea of an exact measurement. CPU usage shown in windows is a very crude statistic. Certain algorithms just wont use all portions of the CPU, or they may be bound by memory latency.
second why wouldnt you preallocate, and why would you move?
even with preallocating and downloading 10 + torents files simultaneous, you are putting the files on different sectors for hdd, little better than without preallocating, but still bad.
by moving them after the download, you make sure that the hdd for download if usually clean, and hdd for keeping is unfragmented. i have a seed computer 24/24 and if i dint move file from 1 drive to another, i would get really creppy speed after a time.
Those that bitch and degrade ssd's, prolly never had one before (or one really crappy).
i had a ssd in my system for testing, and i dint find the faster starting of aplications/faster loading of games usefull to me to spend that kind of money on one, instead of buying 2 extra 1 terra drives. (before the prices skyrocket).
is silent ? why the fuck should i care about ?
i hear my 12 psu fan, my artic cooler fan, my video card fan way louder than my bay of 4x1 terra drives. actually, i dont hear my hdd bay at all .
i was more impress of my 24 gb ram drive (24 ram drive, 8 left to do usual stuff), when i tested that
i had a ssd in my system for testing, and i dint find the faster starting of aplications/faster loading of games usefull to me to spend that kind of money on one
Then you just had a crappy one.
Plus with just "testing" you cannot get attached to something, so then you cannot compare the diffrence between a product you have been using for what, 5/6 years?
At start, i was indeed quite sceptical about the whole SSD thing and if it was worth buying one.
Now 4 months later (or longer, can't remember), i get annoyed as fuck when helping friends (none of them have SSD), shit is SO MUCH FUCKING SLOWER.
Even loading in games, those that say that it makes no diffrence, fuck you, it does big time.
Friend of mine has i7-920 with 6GB ddr3-1600 and WD Black 7200RPM, compared mine with load times. I beat him by atleast a 20% faster times.
Streaming games barely got popups (like GTA-like games).
Nah but sorry, getting an SSD right now is not a bad investment, true €1,- per GB or even more is fucking expensive compared to old drives, but compare the NEW prices against the current SSD's and then speak again.

i used for 1 week, os fresh installed on him, games moved, eve online, startrek online, and some shoters, witcher 2, visual studio 2010, chieft arhitect, maya. i plug out the rest of hdd, beside one to keep the swap on lolz.
was an corsair force 3, 60 gb. my comp is an i5 + assortment crap.
like i said was a bit faster, but nothing in the grand scheme of things to even think for one minute, what to get, one 60 gb ssd, or 1 terra new hdd.
ofcorse i saw the difference, but i dint care about it. i asked my friend for ssd, cause i was thinking to get one after all the good things i read about them on the net.
some people care about 10-20% speed increase (what, a level loading in 4 seconds instead of 6 ? wau.), some not.
until i will get a 60(120) gb ssd at the price of an 120 (160) gb hdd, i will pass. from my pov, they don't worth the money.
Is there any website or post on the official forum that I might have missed that explains how tank classes work ? Because I want to roll a Jedi Knight Guardian (or its Sith equivalent) but I've heard they're badly balanced on the beta right now.

No, its not about mainly read or write speed, its about access time / latency.
Its easily noticeable when they are for example players with various armor (textures), on classic hdd it loads with hiccups few seconds (or can be little higher), but on SSD its instant.
Anyone who have SSD would tell you that and then never go back to classic HDD.

spajdr, it's no point.
Some people have a concrete wall of 5km infront of their heads, you could tell them that X is good for you and got enough to back that up.
But they still believe it's bad and not better then A or B is..

most people today will spend that money on extra 5-10fps, instead of extra 5-10s of shorter loading time.. and how short those 1-2s load times can really get..
@Sin
Says you, who in 1 topic rages about people bashing WoW/SC2/D3 but then goes bashing on IW (wich is from the same goddamn company) about MW3.. (or it was another game, memory fail)
Please brotha...

cant respond to email for beta times then they have maintenance and still cant, after maintenance login to client works with password, try to use the respon button from mail and login to site to accept my times thingy and asks magic question i get it right i know etc and it says login failed u may be blah blah about password.. er no i changed it last time u told me to and i can still log in the main client..
cant get password reset nothing comes in mail.. are they trolling me !!! is this some special way to stop more influx of players
it also made some bullshit attempt at telling me i was logging in from different pc lol er no same ip thanks.

dude, if you would follow, i merly made an observation of your (plural) discussion about the benefits and costs/perfroamce of ssd's and didnt say anything for or against them myself.
so jump over your conrete wall and apologize.
And whats with people always defending these kinda things with personal attacks and insults lol ... i dont get it ...
