Have some stupid questions (forgive me i dont know shit about wii)

If i buy one from amazon right now is it safe to assume it's the latest firmware?

can this be softmodded?

any external HD work? if i have an external HD do I still need a SD card?

is a controller required to softmod it (gc controller etc)

do emulator/roms work well?

I assume there's no major issues with launching backups?

if i buy the new zelda will there be any conflicts? does it require some shitty updates like 360 games?

also any advice would be appreciated

i have no idea what i'm doing but the wii definitely sounds like a worthy investment

SNES emulation is on the same level as PC/Xbox1/PS3 - you shouldn't have any problems with it -- and you can even surpass 3rd party emulators and go the WAD injection route for using the official Nintendo-made emulator =)

The Wii only makes use of USB2, so you wouldn't really see any benefit over the extra cost of USB3. Regions are immaterial since the backup loaders bypass region restrictions Very Happy

Not at all! In fact, it can be beneficial for some games - drops the file sizes down =)

Perhaps the versions of IOS250/249 you've installed don't support USB2.0? It's been so long since I setup 249/250 that I can't remember the exact steps ... so just Google for "wii IOS usb2" or something :\ Or it could be that your HDD requires more power than the Wii is putting out via one USB port (you can buy dual USB > single USB adaptors on the Wii), perhaps the drive isn't spinning up in time for WiiFlow/USB Loader to pick it up or even just something as simple as your HDD isn't supported by the Wii.

My older external drive, a WD Mybook, wasn't supported by the Wii and simply wouldn't work whatsoever - no matter what I did - so I changed it for a LaCie Rikki.

i'm starting to think it's just not supported, I plugged in a different one and got past the freeze about 30 seconds ago

progress

we shall see though, i've spent like 3 hours reading through tutorials and shit and I feel like breaking someones face, PSP was way less hassle than this

How? Other people might have the same issue and it would help if you explained what you did and how you got it to work Very Happy Either way, congrats =) As for Ocarina of Time, of course there's an official one! You have two options outside of non-Nintendo made emulators;

Get the VirtualConsole version of the game. This is a WAD bundled with Nintendo's own N64 emulator. http://www.nintendo.com/wii/online/virtualconsole/games/detail/RH5HVVtVsUXAzfuh99QbFMlHUGPhREkS (Google for the actual WAD itself, just MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT SAY INJECTED! If it's an "inject" then it's NOT the official release. Try Googling "The.Legend.of.Zelda-Ocarina.of.Time.PAL.VC.Wii-iND")

Get the Gamecube version of Ocarina of Time + Master Quest. The Wii plays GC games perfectly .. though you can only launch GC backups via burning to DVD. No ISO loading.

The only problem was my hard drive. I did everything else following op's guide and abit of your guide. I screwed up the WAD process the first time around but slowly followed the guide around and it was alright. It seems to be working alright now.

Thanks for all the help, I appreciate it. I'll check out the GC versions... burning to disc is no problem!

Since you're burning to disk, I recommend installing DarkCORP Full (check the Softmod Guide for the email addy you have to email to get the Full pack) - which is a modified CIOS/MIOS for loading backups from the Disk Channel, including GC titles. Of course, that's if your machine isn't too new and doesn't have the new drive that cannot read DVD-Rs.

oh and you're welcome, always glad to help =)

Can I loan a Wii from a friend, softmod it for a while and then return it to the original FW? This friend is adamant against modding (don't ask me why), so I need to ninja the bitch.

from the great guide sabin posted:

Quote:

Can it be undone?
Most (if not all) steps in this guide can be undone one way or another. These steps will not always be provided however, and they may be dangerous to do.

Your warranty will also be gone forever, it will not be restored when removing the softmod.

No it doesn't, in fact if you are using an SD card with the modded softmod files then it's recommended not to keep the SD card inserted all the time. At least it was that way on the old banner bomb tricks.

As for size? It doesn't really matter, though I recommend 1GB so you can dump your NAND as a backup to keep.

Ok, two things bud;

1. You won't see anything with DarkCorp installed. All it does is allow you to load burned DVDs from the disk channel. If you want to check to see if it's working, simply put a copied game into the tray and attempt to load from disk channel on the main menu Smile

2. To launch copied games you need a backup launcher. As far as I know, you can't just launch from HBC. So I recommend either CFG Loader or, my favourite, USB Loader GX.

Good luck!

As far as I remember; you won't immediately get a USB loader icon on the start screen.. Only via HBC. To get a launcher icon, you need a forwarder or a "channel" for it.
