Hey guys. Not sure if this is the place for such question, but here it goes:

I watch my movies on my PC, which has a 1366x768 display. When I "borrow" movies, I usually download them at a 720p (1280x720) resolution. This means the video will be upscaled to fit my display.

Now, if I get a 1080p movie, with his 1920x1080p resolution, and play it, it means it will be downscaled, again, to fit my display.

And the question his: assuming the movie, the bit rate and overall quality is the same on both a 720p and 1080p videos, with the difference being only the movie resolution, which one should I get to enjoy best quality on my end, since the 720p gets upscaled, and the 1080p downscaled?

To be honest, such difference on my end is minimal, close to nothing, but still I have this thing on my head.

I made a naked eye test, and while the 1080p seemed to looked better, and while it may very be a placebo effect, I'm still not entirely convinced especially due to other factors. There's the size question, with the 1080p being heavier, and the sense of stressing the system due to feeding it with something bigger than what his mouth can chew. I'm feeling like I'm overkilling it.

I hope I made myself clear in what I'm asking.

So, fellow humpers, what do you think? To view a movie on a 1366x768 display, should I/we get a 720p or a 1080p version? And would a 1080p stress a system, when there's no need for it (overkill)?

Do you delete the movies right after watching, or archive them? If the latter, it's another point in favor of 1080p since who knows what you'll be using in the future.

I store them, but is as you said: if I get a better display in the future and if I want to re-watch a movie, I'll just redownload a better version. Razz

720p, you won't even notice a difference if you download the 1080p. Its just a waste of bandwidth. Unless you plan investing in a bigger screen or a tv in the future I see no reason to download the 1080p.

It depends on the quality of your display, your preference, the quality of the rips you get, teh movie itself. The list is too long. Some people claim they can see the difference when the bitrate is 500kb/s lower, which I think is bullshit. Other people say they see no difference on a 1080p TV between 720p and 1080p rips, I think that's bullshit too.

So download some good rips and compare. See for yourself if the extra gigs are worth it.

I guess I'm a bit of a hoarder when coming to movies, TV-shows and games to some extent. I bought a external HDD about a year ago just for storing sh*t basically. But I'll delete everything if it comes to a time were if I have to, I will, but for now, it doesn't bother me.

So, I' guess I'll stick to the 720p format, taking in account what you guys said. The difference is negligible, and since I don't have a 1080p capable monitor/TV nor I plan on getting one any sooner, I'll save some GBs on the process, and with that some time also.

Thanks.

If you can download 1080p in reasonable time, why do you even want to store it? What's the point in bloating the HDD.

If your current screen does not have a native resolution of 1,920 pixels wide by 1,080 (1080p) than indeed it is a waste as you will not be able to see the difference on a smaller resolution.

I don't think Santa will pass through Portugal this year... at least not with HDTVs. Failed Troll

TECHNICALLY, the answer to your question is 1080p, because your screen resolution is between 720p and 1080p. That said, your screen resolution is SO close to 720p it would make no sense to go to 1080p.

So the answer to your question is infact "ballz".
