i'm no expert, but typically i pickup a tube of the antec stuff anytime i'm going to have a reason to remove the CPU heatsink.
the antec nano diamond stuff works pretty well, was a bit thicker than the antec artic silver i had been using before, not exactly the easiest to spread, no complaints though.
Arctic 5 was what I used back in 2006 when I built (most of) this current PC, now there's (Like the above graph points out.) a number of other solutions such as more chemical alternatives.
(Many of which offer several benefits over the older types of thermal paste, time it takes for it to "burn in" for example and of course the cooling advantages.)
EDIT: Still there's usually only a few available in the stores over here so I don't keep up to date on this much but now and again some reviews or comparison article appears, helpful to know at least something for that next computer upgrade.
man I didnt know this should have ordered something with my new hardware I suppose..planting a water cooler on the bitch but Im getting the stuff around the holidays and its going to be hard to wait until after to set this bitch in to action. And I know I will never open it up again
edit: Thermalright Chill Factor 3 will be more than adequate, right?
8 out of 10 dentists prefer zipfero to competing brands(fraich3 and Mutantius)!
I use Arctic Silver 5 in a Quad Core setup and it runs perfectly cool. I see no reason to use anything else. Had enough left over to put it on a few servers going to the DC too.

If you have it on already and are fine then sure, no reason to buy another one just because it's better.
But if you are buying a new paste today i see no reason to buy Arctic silver 5.
It's old hat.

I still think it's gonna keep 90% of the processors you buy very cool, regardless of its hipster status, and no need to spend any extra money on anything better.
But arctic silver is not any cheaper than pastes that are better/last longer so it stands that there is no reason to buy Arctic silver 5.
Arctic silver 5 (3.5g) £6.24
Thermalright Chill Factor 3 (4g) £4.76
My mum is pretty cool, she stopped by at my house earlier on her way back from work n gave me a load of biscuits.
Top stuff.

I'm going to pretend I won this argument and never visit this thread again.

Saner is not being serious. Unless its the subject of Santa!
a full 8 minutes to do all that crap and even still, with my probably crappy job at applying antec nano diamond stuff ($9.99 no reason not to) and he's getting 70c? wow....
i mean, sure for a 4ghz overclock 70c isn't bad but.... damn, i spent 3 minutes and $3 less and can't push it past 65c, it's not overclocked yet but... still shows me that stuff is a bit of a waste of money i think, marginal difference at best.

70c? He got 70c BEFORE he used Indigo Extreme. Now he tops out at 57. And you can't really compare your unnamed and unclocked CPU temps to his unless you have the same model, same voltage, same frequency, same cooler.
