The later turns of such long campaigns really slow the game down due to all the calculations or what the game engine might be doing, haven't tested such long games myself but the game is already rather CPU dependent so it's probably one of the reasons this happens, RAM might be another. Smile

And here's the updated files, tried to catch most of them (Rar'ed the entire game folder and sorted out all 09/24/2010 files.) so it should be mostly complete. - http://www.multiupload.com/40OHOIXTBL

GTX 460 here too and with Leaders screens at Medium I am having black textures glitches, pics at spoiler below.

 Spoiler:

At Medium settings, after a leader screens were shown for about 20+ times game crashes and Windows info bubble appears stating nvidia driver has crashed too. After that I am starting to experience glitches in 3D mode - flickering textures, misaligned geometry and in 2D mode - mouse cursor trailing, moving window leaves traces of it. I need to shutdown my machine to reset the GPU, restart doesn't help.

With Leaders screen set at High, same black texture glitches as with Medium setting, but in addition leaders skin turns into grayscale mode after a leader screens were shown 1-3 times, and game and nvidia driver crashes after just a few more such screens. Again only shutdown helps to reset the GPU.

So, I keep Leaders screen at Low setting. And actually it doesn't differ that much from Medium setting, the only exception so far is the Isabela screen, at Low setting background is severely blurred.

Isabela low setting screen

Pachacuti low setting screen

 Spoiler:

Surprising that there is such a huge difference, screens share the same concept - flowing background.

EDIT: Added Isabela and Pachacuti screens at low setting.

I was able to play with Leaders screen at high with initial release. Since that time I have installed Windows updates, latest nvidia drivers and game updates. Somewhere something got broken along the way, and the only way to play now is with Leaders screen at low.

Just tried that I wanted to try for quite some time. I underclocked my GTX 460 1GB to minimum settings possible via msi afterburner to Core Clock: 405 Mhz; Shader Clock: 810 Mhz; Memory Clock: 900 Mhz. In civ 5 video options I disabled AA, set everything to Off / Low settings and Leaders screen to Medium - same black textures glitches at leaders screen. Even tried running game in window mode to no avail.

After reseting GPU to defaults clocks, also tried running game for the first time in DX 9 mode, set everything to maximum possible settings for DX 9 - no black textures glitches at leaders screen Surprised

But in DX 9 there is no AA, and without it game looks awful Sad

290.36 Beta Drivers seems fixed my problem Shocked

Running a nice Quad with 8gigs of ram, it doesn't come anywhere near putting a hurting on the system...but the main issue at that length of game is that unless you completely turn off citystates you're running between 16-25 of them, so it's quadrupling the average amount of calculations and animations it wants to run. Even with the city states turned off you still run into this after most of the world has been capitalized on however.

I find it very much helps if i just keep restarting until I'm on Australia, and sometimes south america if you're playing a bit of a smaller map, as your actual view for animation grabs is shorter.

I generally just quit once turn changes take over 30 seconds. Drinking helps, as it puts me in a weird time lapse that I can ignore Razz

I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me..

I'm thinking of buying the base game off of GamersGate right now as it's only $10.18. I've looked everywhere and it's even cheaper than Amazon at $14.99.

Now the thing is.. I DON'T do Steam. I have no Steam games, and never have. I realize this game HAS to have it so I guess I'd finally break down and make this single exception (on my Vista partition though.. where everything is ''legit''). One of the reasons I want the game over the scene release is the lack of updates. Sooo.. I WAS wondering.. if I get one of those ''all inclusive'' DLC patches.. can I add it into my Steam install OK? I'm not really into multiplayer either (ever.. with any game) and I DO realize that even the SP portion requires a Steam connection. Right now I'm using Revan's patch on the Skidrow release that lets me play SP without any Steam installed at all; but I'd like the Korean and Ancient Wonders DLC with the latest patch so I'm willing to pay.. somewhat Wink .

Also.. why is it all the latest games support DX9 or 11 only? Whatever happened to DirectX 10? I have a Q6600 and two 8800GTs in SLI. They run almost anything fairly decent. Also on a quad-boot system (XP32, Vista64, Ubuntu & W7-64) but no DX11 because the cards don't support it.. so I'm relegated to using DX9 on practically everything.. even though I CAN do DX10 in Vista and W7.. sucks.

I think DX 9 and 10 are kind of like ASP 2 and 3.5 where it's just shared libraries and then 11 is separate.

The rest of that...I have a feeling you're going to have to try on your own. It's worth adding to a steam account if you find it worth buying since you can download it whenever. It's one of those games you wind up wanting to play once a year or so, and easier to download from steam where you're getting all of the updates at once instead of downloading the game then the Update 3254255424 which still doesn't fix all the issues...etc..

Well.. I'm pretty sure that no matter where I buy it I'd have to establish a Steam account anyway. Direct2Drive mentions a ''3rd party'' install and GamersGate mentions nothing like that.. but I'm curious if one could even play single player offline anyway (i.e. without Steam). I mean.. obviously the game HAS been cracked to do just that (my current install does) but a ''legit'' one is another story (kind of the reason I caved in and bought Might & Magic Heroes VI).

Looking back in the thread and researching elsewhere.. here's what I think I might be able to do:

1. Install retail game

2. Update to latest on Steam.

3a. Purchase last 2 DLCs (Korean & Ancient Wonders) and install

or..

3b. Install an uncracked patch with ALL DLCs (I have one)

and finally.. since the latest patch is uncracked (the last 2 actually)..

4. Play the game using Greenluma or some Steam emulator

Because my guess is that as soon as I reconnect to real Steam.. they're gonna' notice that I have DLC that wasn't purchased from them and react.. but I could be wrong (What if one purchased the DLC from somewhere else? Seems like a ''legit'' thing to do or is possible.).

I noticed that Jaason asked basically the same thing (with confirmation it works) a couple of pages back on 93.. but no one answered him. peter980 says that one could do it.. but would have to use a cracked exe.. but there hasn't been one since v.343 so #4 seems the only way to have a retail copy with downloaded DLC AND the latest update.

Thanks for your reply though. I think I'm gonna' take on this challenge myself and will report back soon.. hopefully.

Why not wait a few days and see for what price it goes on daily sale on Steam? It already has a -50% discount so chances are high it will be 7.5$ (with a -75% discount) when it becomes a daily deal.

Valve never discloses upcoming sales info, but Civilization V is quite a big title and also a Steamworks game so I am pretty sure it will be a daily deal during this winter sale. And after watching Steam store for the past year on a daily basis I'd say Civ V discount will be 75% since this game already was on sale several times this year, last time at the 75% discount too (at the higher base price point though) - so when it goes daily during this winter sale I'd expect at least a 75% discount.

As for myself, I will probaly be passing on this game this sale, due to the overpriced DLCs 6 of which (the ones I am interested in) are going to cost more than the game itself.

Yes, of course. But still all the discounted DLCs cost more than the discounted game.

I broke down and bought the base game at GG for $10 (along with the Korean & AW DLC). Tried my method posted above and can safely say it doesn't work. I tried it with JB's files and two other ''all-inclusive'' DLC packs and the extra DLC doesn't even show up.. but unlike using them with some former ''cracked'' exe.. at least the game didn't crash.

Steam insisted on patching the game (Did I mention I HATE Steam?) before I even could start it so there's no chance of ''holding back'' the legit install and using an older cracked version. Guess I'll look for the rest of the DLC at a bargain, and just go entirely retail.

Later last night after buying the base game at GamersGate for $10.18.. I noticed that Amazon (for anyone interested) had lowered the price for the GoTY edition down to $10.99... grrrrr! That's not a bad deal for the entire game and the DLC. Then one can grab the Korean & Ancient Wonders bundled.. at Gamers gate right now for $2.55. Making the entire thing just $13.54!

Added hotset option. All the bugs I had at release are still here. Performance /might/ be slightly better. Loading times are much longer (awful actually).

Probably depends on your PC though.

I don't have a state-of-the-art PC (E8500), I never had problems with excessive loading times or performance (unless a patch broke something in the last four months).

I finally gave in and bought the whole damn thing (including ALL the DLC) off of GG (came to about $20). I'm just a bit miffed that I could have gotten the GotY edition off of Amazon (for $10.99 but that edition has been pulled by them anyway now) and saved about $7 overall.

I've been checking with Steam store but nothing yet. Probably will sell the entire thing for about $5 in a few days.. with my luck.

I guess my main question is how much of a difference is there between the pirated version? Pirated version tends to take a solid 5 minutes just to start for some reason. And i'm wondering if some of the turn loading times are improved.

Well, the main difference is that last 2 patches weren't cracked, and last two DLCs are missing for pirated version (since they require newest patches).

Exempt that, it is pretty much the same. Exempt of course need to having bloated steam client active when starting the game. Very Happy
