I don't see how they realized DA2 was a failure. All of the interviews I've read after the release have been about how innovative and awesome DA2 was. In all interviews there's a red line, "we brought in a lot of new people to the franchise who thought it was awesome". I erased this game from memory though, so I probably missed a bunch of new interviews.
Hmm DA was launched as the successor of BG. Which was untrue. Still DA offered a lot, the role-playing in it made me quit the game very soon though. DA2 was crap according to many, so guess what will you get with DA3?

They acknowledged the fact that DA2 was incredibly polarising, and said that they would "listen to the feedback" coming from all the pissed off DA1 fans. I obviously don't believe them but someone (very optimistic) could give them the benefit of the doubt

Fire up DA2 and wave goodbye to the character attributes?

The next entry in the fantasy role-playing Dragon Age series will draw inspiration from both of its predecessors as well as open-world games like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, developer BioWare said.
Speaking to Wired.com in Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon, BioWare CEO and cofounder Dr. Ray Muzyka said the company has been listening to its fans and learning from the strengths and weaknesses of both Dragon Age II, the latest entry in the popular series, and other games that are on the market today.
"[The next Dragon Age] is gonna have the best of features from the prior Dragon Age games, but it's also gonna have a lot of things I think players are gonna find compelling from some of the games that are out now that are doing really well with more of an open world feel," Muzyka said.

hope that's true , but in the same time hope it's not cuz bioware should find their own way when it comes to DA3
they obviously know DA2 sucks when compared to Skyrim for ex or even DA1 .
Dragon age is still something that haunts me and pissed me off ...
i paid 70 quids ($ , € , whatever) back then for DA:O physical copy, because i wanted to support the true RPG genre ... (oldschool BG etc)
then they released DA2 ... and i was REALLY pissed i gave them my money ...
that being said, i immensly enjoyed DA:O (140hours playthrough first char, several others after ^^)... cant remember ANY game EVER that took (and kept) me that long for a "simple" playthrough.
Its really sad ... and yes... in this case i blame consoles (something im usually against).
@sin317
well DA:O was also on consoles , but i think the blame falls on bioware/EA
they wanted to cash in on the 12 year old derps who are gonna buy the game cuz of all the EXPLOSIONS AND BOOBIES , didn't matter what they owned .
i am someone with a quite short attention spawn. If i play a game from start to finish (i rarely finish games hehe) , spending 140 hours .. its usually a REALLY good sign
DA:O sucked me in from start to end, gameplay, story, everything.
i finished both of them with dlc too , it's not that bad if you play on a harder difficulty
but it wasn't the gameplay that bothered me with the game but it's everything else felt like it was rushed
so naturally the DLC was actually a lot better than the game in terms of variation and the amount of "waves" of enemies who try to buttfuck you , 2 things they addressed with DLC
yeah, since i own the game, all my chars etc are logged aswell hehe.
I remember when we all thought of Dragon Age as the "new coming", the revival of the Baldurs Gates etc etc ...
and then they pulled that crap on us ...
i mean, honestly .. why not use the SAME mechanics in a new story ? Thats all we wanted no ? Just a continuation of the story etc, same game. But no, lets butcher it .
I really really really hope that the conversations aren't marked as quests this time around. My god... did they hugely downsize the party dialog or what??!
their idea that DA2 was a progression of dragon age orgins just killed any love i had for the studio-supported them for years- well, for decades, loved DA-O, hell... i even bought mass effect 2.. i wanted da2 to not let me down ...i made a facebook account to unlock shit in that shit game and there's no coming back from that... fuck you bioware, just fuck.you.
when there is no more room in hell, the D34D will walk the earth
DA2 wasn't as bad as you make it look, it's just that people expected a perfect 10/10 game. It was an enjoyable (on the highest difficulty at least) and long RPG, but it was different than DA:O and had a few problems.
I think I've wasted around 4 hours on this masterpiece of awesomeness™ , desperately trying to find some positive aspect..but nope, there was nothing to do.
Terrible "story", childish "dialogues", extremely repetitive gameplay, bland and uninspired locations, simplistic game mechanics and much much more..it was a complete failure under every aspect for me, really embarassing at times
