hummina hummina...
It turns out my ISP's news provider supports 2 connections. At ~65kb/s each, I'm getting a reliable 120kb/s. Free. That's as much as mutantius gets with giganews

do you get ~50 days retention? do you know who your ISPs news provider is? In Canada (Rogers cable) it's outsourced giganews.

my ISP's news retention isnt too bad, i think its 10 days not entirely sure. i get max speeds though . shame some decent groups aren't included but i'm not gonna pay for stuff like that. paying a company to download is just as bad as buying pirated stuff

well ... usenet isn't entirely about binaries. paying for premium usenet access also get's you extremely long retention times in the text based groups.
I've found these to be pretty helpful at times, and there are groups on virtually every topic.

I forgot to mention, that giganews has a free 3 day trial (max 1 GB transfer) if anyone wants to check it out risk free!

While I would probably not pay to use it, I love the inefficiency of newsgroups. It makes the system bulletproof.
Allow me to explain: While the individual files come through only 95-97% complete (taking the whole set as a statistic, some files may be at 100%, others at 75%) on my server (free ISP server, 120kbps @ 2 channels), there are PAR2 files that fix small inefficiencies (a few rogue %), and for larger problems (like 8/111 posts missing thanks to the farking idiot of a poster) I usually find a repost with those 8 files available to some extent. Thus, you can almost always (never failed me yet) get the file you want with a speed greater than BitTorrent and more reliability than IRC can hope to provide.
If you don't have private access, I'd say that your ISP's news server is the best alternative (unless the server is shit; then you're pretty much fucked.)
